Jannik Sinner has improved in leaps and bounds since last year, winning a handful of big titles along the way, including his maiden Grand Slam at the Australian Open. Daniil Medvedev praised the Italian for refining his craft and making himself a difficult player to face.
The Russian is in the same half of the Wimbledon draw as Sinner and could face him in the business end of the tournament. They have met 11 times on the ATP tour to date, with Medvedev holding a narrow 6-5 lead.
Medvedev stated that it would be hard to beat Sinner now due to the progress he has made in his game. After his second-round win against Alexandre Muller, he stated that facing either the Italian or Carlos Alcaraz was a huge challenge for any player right now.
He [Jannik Sinner] can hit winners from every position in the court, but he could miss. Now he doesn’t miss much. It’s not easy. In order to beat him you know you have to step out there, you need to be able to hit winners from every position of the court yourself. It’s not easy to play them [Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz]. It’s a great challenge.
Daniil Medvedev said at a Wimbledon press conference
Sinner and Alcaraz have put in strong performances at Wimbledon this year. While the Italian beat his compatriot Matteo Berrettini in four sets recently, Alcaraz won both his matches without breaking a sweat.
Daniil Medvedev survives Alexandre Muller scare to make it to Wimbledon third round
Former US Open champion Daniil Medvedev survived a major scare during his Wimbledon second-round match against Alexander Muller. With already quite a few upsets in the tournaments, the Russian looked like he was adding his name to the lot before he dug himself out of a hole.
Muller challenged the former World No. 1 in the first two sets, taking the lead in the contest before conceding the second set in the tie-break. With momentum on his side, Medvedev managed to win the next two sets and seal the 6(3)-7, 6-4 (7), 4-6, 5-7 win to secure his spot in the third round.
It was a very tough, physical match. Alex played well and some moments in the match were very tough to stay in touch with him. I was losing by one set and a break.
Daniil Medvedev said
Medvedev will next face Germany’s Jan-Lennard Struff, who beat Zhang Zhizhen 5-7, 6-3, 7-6(1), 7-6(8). They have faced each other six times so far, with the Russian coming out on top on five occasions.
