- Medvedev ended Carlos Alcaraz's unbeaten streak in 2026 with a tactical victory in the semifinals.
- Jannik Sinner celebrated his first ATP title while acknowledging a successful weekend for Italian sports.
The California desert always delivers its fair share of drama, and the 2026 edition of Indian Wells was absolutely no exception. Jannik Sinner officially hoisted his first-ever trophy at the BNP Paribas Open on Sunday, cementing his status as the man to beat on the ATP Tour. But while the Italian sensation walked away with the hardware, the weekend also belonged to Daniil Medvedev.
Despite falling short in the championship match, Medvedev proved that the supposed “two-horse race” between Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz still has a very stubborn, very talented third wheel. He said in an interview to Bolshe!:
If we consider these last two matches, maybe I’m not that far off. I may even have been better than Carlos in certain aspects. Against Jannik, I probably wasn’t better at anything, but I was close to his level. I served better than Carlos, but Jannik served much better than me, better than anyone I’ve played this year. My backhand was good, maybe even better than Jannik’s, but he served so well that it wore me down, and that eventually tires you out. What they excel at is consistency; they play like that all year round. I have more ups and downs; to beat them, I need to be at my best, as we’ve seen this week.
The final scoreline read 7-6 (6), 7-6 (4) in favor of the World No. 2, but those numbers barely scratch the surface of how competitive this match actually was. Sinner and Medvedev went toe-to-toe in a baseline war of attrition that tested both their physical conditioning and mental resolve.
The defining moment of the tournament came in the second-set tiebreak. Medvedev jumped out to a commanding 0-4 lead, looking entirely poised to force a deciding third set. Instead of folding, Sinner dug his heels into the hardcourt. He rattled off a spectacular sequence of points, bullying the ball around the court to completely erase the deficit and eventually close out the match.
Daniil Medvedev snaps the unbeaten streak of Carlos Alcaraz
To truly understand the gravity of Daniil Medvedev’s weekend, one will have to look at what happened before the final. Heading into the semifinals, Carlos Alcaraz was the hottest player on the planet. The young Spaniard boasted an unblemished record in 2026 and looked practically unbeatable.

Medvedev didn’t care about the streak. Putting together a tactical masterclass, he absorbed Alcaraz’s heavy pace and redirected it beautifully, handing the Spaniard his very first loss of the calendar year.
It was a massive statement from a guy who, just weeks prior, admitted he was completely lost on the court. Earlier in the season, Medvedev confessed he was struggling so badly with his form that he “couldn’t put a single ball in the court.” Beating Alcaraz under the bright lights of Indian Wells completely shattered that narrative.
A weekend to remember for Italian sports
While Jannik Sinner was busy lifting the trophy in California, he made sure to acknowledge a massive weekend for his home country. During his post-match press conference, the newly crowned Indian Wells champion took a moment to congratulate Formula One driver Kimi Antonelli on his recent Grand Prix victory.

Sinner called it “a special day for Italy,” highlighting a golden era for Italian sports on the global stage. The Italian has never hidden his liking for Formula One, and it was on display throughout the fortnight at Indian Wells.
The tennis world doesn’t stop spinning, and the tour immediately shifts its focus to the East Coast for the Miami Open. Sinner and Alcaraz will enter as the heavy favorites, looking to build momentum ahead of the European clay-court swing and Roland Garros.
As for Daniil Medvedev, the mission remains exactly the same. He will open his Miami campaign in the second round against either Aleksandar Kovacevic or Rei Sakatomo.
