What Daniil Medvedev must do to get his form back. The Russian ace and the former World No.1 has suffered an opening-round exit again.

In Cincinnati, Medvedev, for the fourth time, suffered a defeat in his opening round. Last year, as well, it was no different. This year, his opponent was Australia’s Adam Walton, whom he faced on Sunday (August 10) amid intense heat and humidity.

The first set went to the tie-breaker, which Medvedev clinched, but Walton kept himself alive in the match by winning the second set and capitalized on his momentum by taking a 4-1 lead in the third. It was then that ‘Medvedev did Medvedev things’. During the changeover, the 2021 US Open champion put his head inside the fridge to cool down.

Here is the picture:

Medvedev is a former champion in Cincinnati, winning the title in 2019 by beating David Goffin. He is a six-time champion in Masters 1000 tournaments, but this season, he could reach a semifinal in this category just once: at the Indian Wells Masters, where eventual runner-up Holger Rune knocked him out.

Medvedev has now won just one match in the two Masters 1000 on the North American hard-court swing before the US Open. At the Canadian Open (which he won in 2021), Medvedev’s run was ended by Alexei Popyrin in the third round.

Walton, on the other hand, has produced his best in the Masters 1000 when he reached the fourth round in this year’s Miami Open. Taylor Fritz eliminated him in straight sets.

The Australian took a 1-0 head-to-head lead over Medvedev after their first-ever encounter. The 26-year-old will next be locking horns with 22nd seed Jiri Lehecka, against whom he trails 0-1 in the head-to-head matchups, losing in the round of 32 of the 2024 Adelaide International.

Daniil Medvedev feels Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner are not invincible players

Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner have won the last seven Grand Slam titles. But Daniil Medvedev warned them about a ‘third’ player, who could challenge them and end up winning more than them, just like what Novak Djokovic did during the Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal era.

Medvedev also thinks the two young Grand Slam champions are not at all unbeatable because on some days, even they can lose. This season, Sinner lost to a player other than Alcaraz just once: in the second round of the Halle Open, where eventual champion Alexander Bublik knocked him out. Last year at Flushing Meadows, Alcaraz, the 2022 US Open champion, succumbed to defeat in the second round.

They are strong players, but at the same time, they both can lose sometimes. For example, Jannik lost against Sascha in Halle, and Sascha won the tournament. Carlos lost against Botic just less than a year ago… Every time you are on the court with them, you need to try to win.

Daniil Medvedev told the ATP Tour

While Medvedev will next be starting his preparation for the US Open, both Alcaraz and Sinner have secured a spot in the third round in Cincinnati. Sinner beat Daniel Elahi Galan to schedule his career’s first clash with Canada’s Gabriel Diallo. Alcaraz knocked out Damir Dzumhur and will next be facing Hamad Medjedovic.

Sinner is bidding to defend his title. Alcaraz lost to Djokovic in the final in 2023, while last year, he suffered an opening-round exit. The four-time Grand Slam champion is chasing his third title of the season after his wins at the Australian Open and Wimbledon. Alcaraz has lifted five titles so far this season, including at the French Open, by beating Sinner. They can face each other if they reach the final.
