Former World No. 1 Daniil Medvedev produced the best performance of his current US Open campaign with a dominant 6-0, 6-1, 6-3 win over Nuno Borges. The Russian is bidding to win his second US Open title after his success in 2021.
After his title-winning campaign in 2021, Medvedev performed an iconic FIFA ‘dead fish’ celebration after beating Novak Djokovic in the final. The fifth seed has now expressed eagerness to perform a new celebration if he secures his second Grand Slam title in New York.
I feel like I know what I want to do if I win my next Grand Slam, when I win it hopefully. A couple of times I was close and didn’t manage to do the celebration. Better to win matches and then the celebration. Press conferences come as they come. I just hope I can win more matches. That’s where you have more opportunities to speak or to do some crazy stuffDaniil Medvedev told Nick Kyrgios in an on-court interview
The US Open has been Medvedev’s most consistent Grand Slam event. He reached his first Major final in 2019, where he lost to Rafael Nadal in five close sets. He secured his only Grand Slam title at Flushing Meadows in 2021, denying Djokovic a calendar-year Grand Slam.
In 2023, Medvedev made it to the final and faced Djokovic once again. However, the Serb turned the tables on the Russian and beat him in straight sets. Up next for Medvedev is a quarterfinal clash with World No. 1 Jannik Sinner on Wednesday (September 4).
Daniil Medvedev reveals his approach to training sessions after reaching 2024 US Open quarterfinals
Daniil Medvedev is a man on a mission at this year’s US Open, where he is aiming to win his second Grand Slam title. After reaching his fifth quarterfinal in New York, Medvedev has revealed his mindset and approach to his practice sessions.

I try to work hard. Sometimes I do, sometimes I don’t. There are days when it is tougher to go out on court and practise, but I have the mentality that if the other guy practises more than me, I have less chances to win, and I want to win all the time. So I try to practise as much as I can.Daniil Medvedev said in his on-court interview with Nick Krygios
Since 2018, the Russian has won more matches on hard courts (268) than any other player. His compatriot Andrey Rublev is second with 210 wins. This consistency has transpired on the Grand Slam level across surfaces, as he has made the quarterfinals in five of the last six Majors.
Medvedev seems to be peaking at the right time at the 2024 US Open. He struggled a bit in the opening round against Dusan Lajovic, overcoming the Serbian in four sets. However, his level gradually improved in wins against Fabian Marozsan and Flavio Cobolli.
In the fourth round against Nuno Borges, he dropped just four games in the entire match. If he can continue that trend against Jannik Sinner in the quarterfinals, the Russian has every chance to make it to his fourth career US Open semifinal.
