Daniil Medvedev has been having a rough season following his two runners-up and semifinal reach this year. In Madrid, he retired after sustaining an injury in his quarterfinal match against Jiri Lehecka and has now admitted the possibility of not defending his Rome title in a few days.
Medvedev was hoping to claim his first title of the season after defeating Alexander Bublik and Sebastian Korda en route to his quarterfinal tie against Lecheka. He only played for two minutes before beginning to feel uncomfortable on the clay court.
As he engaged in the mental battle about whether to continue or not, he told the on-court physio about his potential injury.
He only lasted the first set, losing 4-6, before retiring. Despite no definite call to what the injury is, the Russian revealed to Tennis Major that he felt his hip get blocked during a return game. This might be obviously more serious than even projected, as he added that he doesn’t know how many days he will be sidelined.
Now I cannot say more. Hopefully for sure tomorrow or day after, because normally you need time, MRI, et cetera, to see what it is, and if it’s something five days, two weeks, I have no idea. So cannot tell you more.Daniil Medvedev said
There’s a great possibility that Medvedev will not be able to defend his Rome title, as it is scheduled to begin on May 6. This has been a difficult season for the 28-year-old, as he has missed out on winning a title on four occasions this season.
Also, this comes at the same time that Carlos Alcaraz withdrew from the Rome Open due to continuous pain in his forearm. This may also likely see three Top 4 players miss the Rome tournament as Jannik Sinner has a hip injury.
Daniil Medvedev reveals he loves the congested format of the Tour after Elena Rybakina’s complaints
Daniil Medvedev has revealed that he likes the congested Masters format of the Tour just days after WTA star Elena Rybakina complained about the congested season. The Russian has always maintained an applauding consistency this season, exiting early only once in a tournament this season.
The Russian revealed that playing a compulsory two-week Masters tournament allows players to plan their Tour.
I like it for, let's call it personal reasons, I like it when there is a free day. If you want to do well on the tour, you have to play these tournaments and you have to choose well, because if you play the 2-week Masters, you can't add many more tournaments. So, personally, I like it.Daniil Medvedev said.
Medvedev will be hoping to return to court before the French Open, which starts on May 26.
