In Short
  • Daniil Medvedev disputes the notion that Jannik Sinner is invincible, emphasizing that top players can still be beaten.
  • Sinner is on a 31-match winning streak at ATP Masters 1000 events and has not lost since February.
  • Medvedev aims for a strong performance at the Italian Open after a disappointing early exit at the Monte Carlo Masters.

Daniil Medvedev has challenged the perception that World No.1 Jannik Sinner has reached an untouchable status on tour, insisting that the most dominant players remain vulnerable throughout the season. Sinner has lost just two matches this season and has dropped only two sets in two months on tour.

Sinner is currently on a 31-match ATP Masters 1000-level winning streak. He has not lost a match since February, when Jakub Mensik used his big-serving technique to crush the Italian star. The 24-year-old has won five consecutive ATP 1000 tournaments, and he’s on the brink of a sixth at the Rome Masters.

The World No.1 has not dropped a set at the Rome Open, and he’s the favorite to win the title. With Carlos Alcaraz sidelined due to injury, Sinner is expected to remain unchallenged until the clay-court swing ends. Also, Novak Djokovic is struggling with physical problems and has not won a singles tour-level match since March.

At the Madrid Open final, Sinner faced Alexander Zverev, a match billed as a clash between the World No. 1 and World No. 3, but it ended with the Italian star crushing the German in 56 minutes. This season, Sinner has yet to get past two sets in a championship match on tour.

Medvedev faced Sinner at the Indian Wells Open final in March. The Russian star had defeated Alcaraz in the semi-finals, but could not stop Sinner from triumphing over him in straight sets. Speaking at his post-match press conference, Medvedev admitted that the idea of Sinner being unbeatable is a flaw, as players have beaten him this season already:

There is always a chance to beat Sinner, more or less. But lately he rarely has a bad day. Carlos and Novak can keep up with him. I have played him at Indian Wells, but never on clay. If Jannik loses, don’t be surprised; that is sport. The problem is distinguishing between spectators who may have had too much to drink and are excited, and those who drink and have bet.

Sinner will face Andrey Rublev in the quarter-finals of the Rome Masters on Thursday (May 14). A win for Sinner will see him make history by becoming the first man to win 32 consecutive ATP Masters 1000-level matches on tour. Medvedev is also seeking to win the Italian Open for the first time since 2023.

Daniil Medvedev reflects on his Monte Carlo shocking early exit

Daniil Medvedev has had one of the most horrendous starts to the clay season. Following his good runs at the Indian Wells and Miami Open, he slumped to a 6-0, 6-0 loss against Matteo Berrettini in the first round of the Monte Carlo Masters. He reacted to the defeat by smashing his racket multiple times in a match that lasted under an hour.

He was later fined $7,000 for unsportsmanlike conduct. However, things came better for the Russian star at the Madrid Open, where he reached the fourth round before losing to Flavio Cobolli. Medvedev revealed that the Monte Carlo Masters early exit was very tough to swallow, but he did well to bounce back in Madrid:

Monte Carlo was tough. You can lose matches 6-3 6-3 and then you understand that the next day you need to work on your forehand, your backhand, your movement on clay or something else. But if you lose 6-0 6-0, you must relax, recover, and simply try to perform better next time. In Madrid I played three good matches, including the one I lost against Flavio. In Monte Carlo I had no energy. Normally, when I want to break my racket, it is something I decide consciously.

Medvedev defeated Thiago Tirante 6-3, 6-2 in the round of 16 of the Italian Open. The former US Open champion will face Lucky loser Martin Landaluce, who has been in sensational form since arriving in Rome. Should Medvedev beat the Spaniard, he’s projected to face Jannik Sinner in the semi-finals.
