Jannik Sinner is through to the semifinals for the second consecutive time. The semifinal spot was assured when Taylor Fritz defeated Alex de Minaur in the penultimate match of the Ilie Nastase Group.
Sinner, despite securing the semifinal berth, continued his dominant run and beat Daniil Medvedev 6-3, 6-4 on Thursday (November 14). After the match, Medvedev said Sinner would trouble every player on the tour in the years to come.
When Medvedev was asked in the press conference whether he was tired of Sinner or whether every match against Sinner looked like a new challenge for him, Medvedev said it’s both because the 23-year-old is ‘barely losing this year’.
Medvedev added that only one player is challenging Sinner and that’s Carlos Alcaraz. The Spaniard has won all three clashes with Sinner this season and also leads 6-4 in their head-to-head encounters.
Daniil Medvedev wants to build a better version of himself
Daniil Medvedev will end his season without a title since 2017. Only twice he has reached finals this season, at the Australian Open and Indian Wells, losing to Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz respectively.
Medvedev has admitted that he wanted to be the World No. 1 but ‘didn’t play well enough’ this year. He now wants to ‘build’ something new with his team and execute it during his matches.
At the ATP Finals, Sinner hasn’t yet dropped a set. He kicked off his campaign by breezing past De Minaur, before beating Fritz in the second match. Alcaraz has lost and won a match each and is set to lock horns with Alexander Zverev in this third group-stage match.
