Daniil Medvedev shared great feelings for Alexander Zverev after his recent title win at Roland Garros. The German secured his first-ever Grand Slam title in Paris after years of setbacks.
Medvedev, who has a Grand Slam of his own, believes Zverev would be feeling great after his Slam win, following so many heartbreaks. Both are currently playing at the Halle Open. Speaking ahead of the tournament, the Russian said:
I think first of all it’s a great feeling so I was really happy for Sascha, you know, to see because he had some tough losses in the semis, in the final – and the final was tough, five sets. So to see him succeed was actually a good feeling and I’m pretty sure he feels good about this. I think the, how you say, the feeling meaning the after feeling for everyone is different. For me for some time it was a bit like a bit euphoric and I managed to play so well having this feeling and then, step by step, you lose it a bit and then the new rythm needs to come in. So we have no idea how it’s gonna work for him, but I think everyone is pretty happy for him.
One of the heartbreaks Zverev got was at the hands of Medvedev at the 2024 Australian Open semifinal. The Russian came back from two sets down against the German to advance to his third Australian Open final.
Zverev’s Grand Slam title came after 3 Grand Slam final losses. They were to Dominic Thiem at the US Open 2020, Carlos Alcaraz at Roland Garros 2024, and Jannik Sinner at the Australian Open 2025.
Alexander Zverev opens his account in Halle Open
Alexander Zverev marked his return to singles action with a hard‑fought win at the Halle Open. The world number three defeated Czech player Vit Kopriva 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 in his first match since capturing the French Open title earlier this month. He now advances to face fellow German Yannick Hanfmann in the second round of the grass‑court event.
The victory comes just weeks after Zverev finally broke through for his maiden Grand Slam triumph at Roland Garros, where he outlasted Flavio Cobolli in a dramatic five‑set final. That win ended years of near misses, including three previous Grand Slam final defeats.

Despite his success on clay and hard courts, Zverev has yet to lift the trophy in Halle, though he has twice reached the final. The tournament serves as a key warm‑up for Wimbledon, which begins on June 29.
Zverev’s track record at Wimbledon remains modest compared to his achievements elsewhere. While he has been a finalist at both the Australian and US Opens, he has never progressed beyond the fourth round on the grass of the All England Club.
Other matches in Halle
Hubert Hurkacz opened his campaign in Halle with a commanding performance, defeating eighth seed Andrey Rublev 6-3, 6-2. The 2022 champion looked sharp from the start and will now face German wild card Daniel Altmaier in the next round.
Daniil Medvedev also advanced smoothly, overcoming Tomas Martin Etcheverry 6-3, 6-4 in their first Lexus ATP Head2Head meeting. The fourth seed, who has twice reached the final in Halle, will meet Terence Atmane in the second round.
Elsewhere, Ethan Quinn battled back from a slow start to upset Karen Khachanov 1-6, 6-4, 6-4. His reward is a second-round clash against either third seed Ben Shelton or Lorenzo Sonego.
Sho Shimabukuro earned his first victory as a Top-100 player by edging Tallon Griekspoor 6-4, 3-6, 6-4, setting up a match with Frances Tiafoe. Fabian Marozsan also progressed, defeating Miomir Kecmanovic 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 to book a meeting with fifth seed Taylor Fritz or Zizou Bergs.
