Daniil Medvedev threatens to quit ATP Finals after an astonishing outburst in his match against Taylor Fritz
Daniil Medvedev is scheduled to play Alex de Minaur and Jannik Sinner in his remaining group stage matches of the ATP Finals.
Daniil Medvedev spoke out after his intense meltdown during his ATP Finals match, where he even threatened to quit. The world No. 4 received multiple code violations and was penalized a point for repeatedly throwing and smashing his racket during his loss to Taylor Fritz. After losing 6-4, 6-3, Medvedev admitted to feeling “angry” and “frustrated” about his behavior.
Medvedev is known for showing emotions on the court, but this time he felt he went too far in his opening round-robin match. The 28-year-old got his first code violation for smashing his racket after hitting three double faults in a row, which cost him the first set.
Things got worse in the second set after he went down a break. Fritz hit a lucky lob winner, which seemed to push Medvedev over the edge. Medvedev threw his racket again and received a point penalty. Fritz apologized, but Medvedev was already visibly upset.
Due to the ATP Finals’ round-robin format, Medvedev still has a chance to advance despite the loss. He will face World No. 1 Jannik Sinner and newcomer Alex de Minaur in his remaining matches. If he wins enough matches, he could still reach the semifinals, though he doesn’t seem too focused on his results in Turin.
Daniil Medvedev’s season in review
When a player qualifies for the ATP Finals, it usually signifies a very good season. Daniil Medvedev has shown great consistency in 2024 but has yet to win an ATP title this year.
The Russian reached the finals of both the Australian Open and Indian Wells at the start of the season. However, he lost to Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz in those matches.
This has been a recurring theme in Medvedev’s 2024 season, as he has struggled to overcome the World No. 1 and World No. 3. His only win against Sinner or Alcaraz came at Wimbledon, where he defeated Sinner in five sets in the quarterfinals.
Medvedev can still advance to the knockout stages of the ATP Finals but will need to get past Sinner in one of his remaining group-stage matches. Given his record against the World No. 1, this might prove challenging.
