Daniil Medvedev has touched down in Beijing for the China Open, yearning for his first title of the season. However, he is aware of the difficulty of the task that lies ahead of him because the likes of Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner may deny him that dream.

Medvedev finished as the runner-up twice this season. The Russian, despite leading in two sets, was beaten by Sinner in the Australian Open final. He played exceptionally at the Indian Wells Masters to reach the final, where Alcaraz denied him the title by defeating him in straight sets.

At Wimbledon, Medvedev beat Sinner in the quarterfinals and hoped to win his second Grand Slam. However, he exited in the semifinals after losing to eventual champion Alcaraz. The last time Medvedev lifted an ATP title was at the 2023 Italian Open.

In China, Medvedev is projected to meet Alcaraz in the semifinals and Sinner in the final. Despite his recent losses against the duo, the 28-year-old is optimistic that if he sticks to his game plan, he can beat Sinner and Alcaraz to claim the Beijing title.

There is a very strong field in Beijing, like last year, it was the same. So, if I want to win the tournament, I have to give my best from the first match to the last. Regarding the draw… Yes, when Sinner and Alcaraz play, you know you’re not in the top two seeds, you know it’s going to be tough. In the semi-finals, you’re going to have to play against one of them, if they can do it. But yes, I’m going to take it step by step. I’m trying to improve my level step by step, and I hope I can show some good tennis.

I think it will be different. I'm different. He's different. It's normal, every year, everything changes. [It’s] actually interesting to see how it goes. It's always interesting to play [against Monfils]. Some great points, some great rallies, [I'm] looking forward to it.
