Juan Carlos Ferrero has left Carlos Alcaraz‘s team, marking an end to a seven-year partnership. The split sent shockwaves across the tennis community as, for sure, no one was anticipating such an announcement.
Another surprising fact about the breakup was the timing, given that just a few weeks are left for the first Major of the season- the Australian Open, which is scheduled to start on January 18. Reactions have been pouring in from the tennis world, with many discussing what could be the reason behind the split of one of the most successful coaching partnerships.
WTA player Daria Saville also joined the conversation. During the latest episode of The Tennis podcast, Saville talked about the possible reasons behind the separation and said Alcaraz might join hands with Ferrero once again in the future.
That’s the other thing, we don’t know how well Carlitos is going to play at this year’s AO, because there’s a bit of a grief moment. I also have a feeling they will get back together. Juan Carlos did say, ‘Maybe one day we will cross paths again.’ I feel like he will be kind of in his corner the whole time. I don’t actually think he’s going to be hiring anyone anytime soon, because he’s got an established team.
Alcaraz will be coached by Samuel Lopez, who joined his team last December. Lopez, as well as Ferrero, won the ATP Coach of the Year award this year. Ferrero also won it back in 2022, after guiding Alcaraz to his first Grand Slam title at the US Open, which saw him become the youngest man to reach the No.1 ranking.
There are a few reasons why you would split with your coach. First of all, probably performances, I don’t think that’s the case! I doubt that’s the reason. Number two, will be commitment from the coach, how many weeks they can do on the road. Juan Carlos was on the road forever with his career, and then he’s done seven years with Carlitos, so not deciding on how many weeks he can commit, and maybe he just wants to be with his family, which is very fair.
Daria Saville added
Apart from the No.1 ranking, Alcaraz also claimed his 24 tour-level titles under Ferrero. Those titles also include the six Grand Slam titles and eight Masters 1000s.
Carlos Alcaraz will be bidding to complete the Career Grand Slam at the Australian Open
Carlos Alcaraz will be bidding to complete the Career Grand Slam at the Australian Open. The six-time Grand Slam champion has yet to progress beyond the quarterfinals of the Melbourne Slam.

This year, he made the last eight but suffered a four-set defeat at the hands of Novak Djokovic. Alcaraz, after winning his first Major at the US Open, completed the rare Channel Slam last year by defeating Alexander Zverev and Djokovic in the finals of the French Open and Wimbledon, respectively.
This year, he defended his French Open crown by battling past his arch-rival Jannik Sinner, but failed to complete a three-peat at Wimbledon, losing the final to the four-time Grand Slam champion. But Alcaraz took his revenge at the US Open, denying Sinner his second consecutive title with a four-set win in the final.
This season, Alcaraz claimed eight trophies from 11 finals – the most on the men’s tour this year. Apart from the two Majors, he also clinched three Masters 1000s: the Monte Carlo Masters, Italian Open, and the Cincinnati Masters. Before the first Major of the season next year, Alcaraz will be locking horns with Sinner in an exhibition event in Incheon, South Korea.
