The way Carlos Alcaraz eked out the win in the epic French Open final he played against Jannik Sinner, for sure, will not be forgotten easily. To defend his crown, Alcaraz overcame a two-set deficit as well as saved three championship points in the fourth set.

It was their first meeting in a Grand Slam final. That match was “almost a miracle” in the eyes of former player Alex Corretja.

It’s crazy what he’s achieved with so many titles, especially the Roland Garros final. I think it was almost a miracle what he achieved, through determination and a lot of strength, and then he sealed it by also winning in New York. I think it was very good for him to recover after losing the Wimbledon final to Sinner, where it seemed that Sinner had found a way to beat him tactically and mentally.

Alex Corretja told Eurosport Spain

Sinner denied Alcaraz the three-peat at Wimbledon. They met three more times, in the finals of the Cincinnati Masters, the US Open, and the ATP Finals.

While the six-time Grand Slam champion clinched the win in Cincinnati and New York, Sinner defended his crown in the year-end championships. Prior to the French Open, the pair also clashed at the Italian Open, where Sinner made his comeback following the three-month doping ban.

Sinner took home six titles from 10 finals, while Alcaraz won eight titles from 11 finals, the most on the men’s tour this year. The Italian ace now holds a 6-10 head-to-head record over Alcaraz.

Apart from the aforementioned matches, the two Grand Slam champions also met in the Six Kings Slam final, where Sinner, for the second consecutive time, defeated the Murcia-native. They will next year, in an exhibition event in Incheon, South Korea, ahead of the Australian Open, the main draw of which starts on January 18.

In the first Major of the season, Sinner will be aiming to complete a three-peat. It was back in 2024 that he lifted his career’s first Grand Slam title by defeating Daniil Medvedev in the Australian Open final. This year in the tournament, he breezed past Stefanos Tsitsipas.

I don’t know if Carlos Alcaraz is going to be mentally prepared to face what lies ahead in his career, at least in the short term, without the figure of Juan Carlos Ferrero. It’s my opinion, that’s why I’m a little sorry for this break.

Feliciano Lopez told El Partidazo de COPE

Alcaraz won all six Grand Slam titles under Ferrero. The youngster, in fact, clinched all his 24 ATP titles under the 45-year-old’s tutelage. The reigning French Open champion also reached the top of the ranking position for the first time under Ferrero. Alcaraz will be coached by Samual Lopez, who joined his team last year in December.

The first major event of the 2026 season is the Australian Open, where Alcaraz has never reached the semifinals. This year, 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic knocked him out in the quarterfinals in four sets. Alcaraz will be bidding to complete the Career Grand Slam in Melbourne.
