Darren Cahill, the coach of Jannik Sinner, has once again defended the World No. 1. This time, it concerns Sinner’s comments about playing in Saudi Arabia for money.

At the start of the Paris Masters, Sinner said he didn’t go to the Middle East for financial reasons. However, his statement triggered sarcastic responses, with some accusing him of creating a false image.

When he said he wasn’t going to Saudi Arabia for the money, his words were misinterpreted. Or he didn’t explain himself well. The truth is that he had never played an exhibition, he always focused on improving his tennis. He knows what his priorities are. Then he got an offer from the Six Kings Slam, with the six best players in the world and a lot of money. He consulted us and we said why not, and he accepted.

Cahill believes that Sinner’s comments were misunderstood and taken out of context. The topic came up again when Sinner’s rival, Carlos Alcaraz, was asked a similar question. Alcaraz gave a contrasting response, saying that money did influence his decision to play in Saudi Arabia. Both players recently competed in the Six Kings Slam, an exhibition event in Riyadh.

Sinner is part of the Ilie Nastase group. His group includes Daniil Medvedev from Russia, Taylor Fritz from the United States, and Alex de Minaur from Australia. Each player will bring unique challenges as Sinner competes over the next few days.

One positive for Sinner is that he won’t be facing Carlos Alcaraz in the group. The Spaniard has been second best to the Spaniard in all three occasions and Alcaraz had a chance to be in the same group as him after entering the tournament as the third seed. Fritz, whom Sinner recently beat in the US Open final, will be also be a notable rival.

Sinner’s first match will be against de Minaur. The Italian has a perfect record against the Australian, winning all seven of their previous matchups.
