Jannik Sinner came from a set down to eke out a 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 win over Carlos Alcaraz in the Wimbledon final. It was his second victory in a grass-court tournament following the 2024 Halle Open.

Sinner also denied the Spaniard his sixth consecutive win over him. Last year in their three meetings, Alcaraz had secured the wins. Also when they met before Wimbledon this year, in the Italian Open and the French Open finals, the four-time Grand Slam champion was unsuccessful in beating the 22-year-old.

In Paris, Sinner was on the verge of winning as he was on three match points in the fourth set. But Alcaraz held his nerves to save those points. Sinner’s coach, Darren Cahill revealed that Sinner watches a lot of Alcaraz’s matches to improve his own game at the press conference:

Jannik watches more Carlos matches than he does anybody else. Because he’s fascinated with the improvements coming in his game. And he’s pushing us as coaches to make sure that he’s improving also as a tennis player. The rivalry is real. It’s there. Hopefully, it’s going to be there and real for the next 10 or 12 years.

Cahill will be leaving Sinner’s team after this year, but because Sinner has won the bet, it will be up to the youngster whether he would still want to keep the Aussie coach in his entourage. Under Cahill and Simone Vagnozzi, Sinner has captured four Majors, the 2024 ATP Finals, and has become a World No.1 player.

The Wimbledon title was Sinner’s second trophy of the season. Both the titles he has lifted in Grand Slam events. Sinner has reached the finals of the first three Grand Slam tournaments and his next aim will be to defend his US Open title. Last year, home favorite Taylor Fritz was at the receiving end of Sinner’s ruthless performance in the US Open final.

Alcaraz, too, will be aiming to double his US Open tally. He lifted his first Grand Slam title at the 2022 US Open. The Murcia native so far played seven finals and won five titles- in Rotterdam, Monte Carlo, Rome, Paris, and at the Queen’s Club Championships, where he captured his career’s fourth grass-court title.

Jannik Sinner shares if he thinks winning titles heals upsets

Although Jannik Sinner has been playing tennis of the highest quality on a consistent basis, he ends up faltering against Carlos Alcaraz. As he was successful in breaking that losing streak at SW19, he later told Tennis Channel whether winning titles helps him get over tough defeats.

Yeah, not necessarily winning heals. I believe that being happy on and off the court heels. Of course, if you win, it seems everything a little bit easier. But, in the same time, you know, having a smile on your face, because the journey it’s long. I’m 23. Hopefully, I can play 10-15 more years if I’m healthy, and thank God I am healthy at the moment.

Had Alcaraz won Wimbledon, he would have become the fifth man in the Open Era to win three Wimbledon titles on the trot after Bjorn Borg, Pete Sampras, Roger Federer, and Novak Djokovic. It was Djokovic whom Alcaraz defeated in the finals of the grass-court Major in the last two years.

Alcaraz also missed the chance to join Borg and become only the second man in the Open Era to complete the Channel Slam for consecutive seasons. Sinner has now become the first Italian man to win Wimbledon. Before him, Matteo Berrettini came close to the title in 2021 by reaching the final but he ended up losing the title to Djokovic.
