Jannik Sinner‘s coach Darren Cahill revisited the 2024 Australian Open final where the World No.1 locked horns with Daniil Medvedev. The Russian was chasing his first title at Melbourne Park following two failed attempts in the final.

He started strongly, winning the first two sets. Sinner, however, denied the 2021 US Open champion the chance to take home his second Grand Slam title.

The 23-year-old, who had knocked out 10-time Australian Open champion Novak Djokovic in the semifinal, made an incredible comeback and claimed the next three sets to emerge victorious in Grand Slam events for the first time. What surprised Cahill the most was Sinner’s demeanor during the tense match.

Then, to find a way to turn that round, but to do it and do it with such calm as well, I was sat watching and thinking, ‘How are you doing this?’, I’d be going out of mind, he’s a man well beyond his years with maturity but he’s still a kid in many ways as well.

Darren Cahill said on the Tennis Insider Club podcast

Cahill joined Sinner’s team in 2022 and will part ways with him after this season. Under him, Sinner became World No.1, won three Majors, and one ATP Finals title.

Tennis broadcaster says Jannik Sinner will never be able to erase doping scandal

Jannik Sinner has been cleared of any wrongdoing by both the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA). After ITIA’s no fault or negligence verdict, WADA challenged their ruling before the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), demanding a ban.

WADA then withdrew their appeal, reaching a case resolution agreement with Sinner. They handed the three-time Grand Slam champion a three-month ban following which Sinner wouldn’t be dealing with the doping cases anymore. Famous sports broadcaster Marcus Buckland said that despite his unintentional clostebol contamination, the doping scandal will always be associated with him.

The saddest thing for him is that this will now be associated with him for the rest of his career, whatever he achieves on the tennis court. The story is coming to an end now, but tennis has become so tribal and this issue will not leave Sinner.

Marcus Buckland told Tennis365

The qualifying rounds of the Indian Wells are underway and the main draw is set to start on March 5. Sinner, however, won’t be able to participate in the season’s first ATP 1000 Masters event as he is serving his doping ban. He also won’t be in action at the Miami Open to defend his title as his ban lifts on May 4.
