UFC is the fastest-growing sports promotion in the world. In North America, the UFC is second only to the NFL in viewership. That was not the case for the UFC in the early stages. However, things changed after Dana White and the Fertitta brothers, Frank and Lorenzo, took control of the promotion. There have been critics and supporters of White’s way of doing business. Recently, Darren Till, an ex-UFC title challenger, revealed his thoughts about it.
Darren Till fought for the welterweight title but lost to Tyron Woodley. However, since that loss, Till lost form as he won only 1 of his next 4 with three successive defeats before he left the promotion. Nonetheless, he did not have ill will towards White or the UFC brass. Darren Till spoke about White and how he does the fight business on a recent podcast appearance.
I think if it comes to business with Dana [White], I think he's cutthroat. I think not on matters but business, and that he's not a bad guy for that business. It's his business and all the top businessmen around the world, I'm assuming, in some sort of way, the same.Darren Till via Ben Heath Podcast
Nevertheless, Till applauded the mentality of White in the fight business. Moreover, he advised that people should not judge White from the perspective of a friend. He explained that, for fighters, White is a business associate and not a friend. The British fighter also revealed that he has that kind of relationship with the UFC CEO.
Till revealed that the upcoming UFC 306 PPV at the Las Vegas Sphere will cost a lot of money for White and the UFC. However, White’s desire to be the first to do a combat sports event showed his commitment to fight business. Recently, White hilariously stated that Eddie Hearn would not be the one to host a combat sports event at the event. As such, Dana White has various visions he aims to execute properly.
Darren Till speaks about fighter pay in the UFC
Fighter pay is a controversial subject in the UFC. The UFC recently faced a class action lawsuit worth billions. However, the promotion settled it out of court for less than a billion. Nonetheless, fighters still talk about increasing the fighter pay and a better share of the profits.
Darren Till spoke about it on his appearance on the Ben Heath podcast. Till did not blame the UFC entirely for it. The ex-UFC fighter agreed to the notion that Canelo Alvarez would make more money than Jon Jones per fight. However, he also stated that the UFC offered its fighters much more than boxing promoters offered their fighters.
The UFC covered the insurance of the fighters for injuries suffered in the fight. Moreover, the UFC has opened UFC Performance Institutes where fighters get free training and medical care. The promotion recently opened a PI in Mexico City, and there is already one in Beijing in addition to the one in Las Vegas. Nevertheless, Till also stated the fighters should get better remuneration despite the facilities provided.
