The off-season has not been kind to Darren Waller. The tight end for the New York Giants is not present at the team OTAs but is engaged in actively pursuing a career in music. Amidst rumors of him retiring from the NFL and walking away from the New York Giants, Waller posted a video of him rapping filled with cryptic messages.

Less than a month after him and WNBA star Kelsey Plum filed for a divorce after just one year of marriage, Darren Waller released a music video filled with references to his marriage last week. The song was not well received with fans critiquing the tight end and suggesting him to stick to football.

ESPN’s Jordan Raanan reported that Waller will make a decision about his future before next week ahead of the team’s mandatory minicamp. The 31-year-old tight end has three more years on his deal with the Giants with a base salary of $10.5 million owed to him this year. If he decides to step away from the game, he will be walking away from potentially earning $35.6 million.

Darren Waller has been injury-prone in the past few years

Last season, the tight end played 12 games and recorded 52 receptions for a total of 552 yards. In his newest freestyle, Waller dropped these bars.

Tryna kick the door in this rap s**t just like a B&E, speaking to the blind it's no wonder they wasn't foreseeing me, for a minute I admit they was deceiving me, pleasing everybody forgot I had to believe in me...

From this, it can be inferred that his passion for football is not on the same level as it used to be. He is now interested in rap and intends to follow on this path, and does not care if others do not approve of it.

It's all good when you got all them yards receiving 'Til them cards you're reading ain't that great, it's hard receiving a message from God that he's taking back what you've been blessed with, I'm foaming at the mouth they know I ain't the one to mess with, quit playing checkers on my board I'm playing chess b***h...

He put all the struggles he has been facing recently into his latest piece, Waller is indicating that he knows what he is doing and the line about God seems to be a reference to the failed marriage and his body no longer cooperating with him.

Waller has continued to struggle with a hamstring injury in the recent years. The toll that continuous injuries take on the physical and mental state of an athlete is one that fans have seen in recent years. Andrew Luck of the Colts practically walked away from a lucrative career just because he no longer wanted to go through the pain of injury. The Giants seem prepared for Waller to walk away as they have signed tight ends Jack Stoll and Chris Manhertz.
