Uruguay vs Colombia did not disappoint as the two sides went head to head in the semi-final of the 2024 Copa America. A valiant effort from both sides culminated in a narrow victory for Colombia as they rode their luck on a goal from Jefferson Lerma in the first half. However, Colombia’s joy of making it to the final was overshadowed by a brutal brawl that took place in the stands following the match.

The Copa America is known for its aggresive style of play, increased frequency of fouls and occasional fights that break out between teams. However, the brawl that broke out between fans and players of either side at Bank of America Stadium quickly got out of control. From Darwin Nunez to Ronald Araujo, fan-recorded videos show players having a go at the opposition fans.

Darwin Nunez consoles ‘frightened’ son after brawl goes out of control against opposition fans

Darwin Nunez took center-stage as Uruguay bowed out in extreme fashion from the Copa America. The Liverpool striker had his fair share of chances to push his side into the lead against Colombia. Despite tasting victory against Brazil, bad luck, coupled with poor finishing in certain instances meant that Uruguay wouldn’t be able to find the net in the semi-final.

Following the brawl that broke out in the stands, fans took notice of an emotional moment between Nunez and his child. The player was seen comforting his son after he himself had to jump up into the stands to ‘fight’ drunk Colombian supporters. As per reports, inebriated Colombian supporters ‘attacked’ the families of Uruguayan players.

It is understood that neither security or police intervened immediately, giving reason for the players themselves to get into the mix. In a post-match interview, Jose Maria Gimenez demanded that the authorities do more and step in with urgency when an incident of this degree happens in the future. The Atletico Madrid man also expressed his concern for the safety of his loved ones.
