LeBron James won his fourth NBA title with the Los Angeles Lakers, a feat that came during a time when the entire world was reeling from the effects of COVID-19. That championship was won in a bubble the NBA set up to keep players and staff, such as Houston Rockets GM Daryl Morey, safe.
During their battles against the other teams in the bubble in Orlando, they played in front of screens showcasing fans watching from their homes. No actual crowd was inside the arena, and players from all teams had to adjust to a different way of life.
They had their families with them, but ultimately faced their opponents, as all players were housed in the same hotels within the bubble. All of this contributed to a different form of competition.
While some appreciated the steps taken by the NBA to provide a safe and secure environment, others lamented them. Many players despised the artificial setting of the bubble and just wanted to be back home.
Over the years, many players, along with many media members, have placed an asterisk over the Lakers’ 2020 championship win. They believe the setting was not ideal for true competition and thus was easy for LeBron James and his teammates. Now, Daryl Morey seemingly joins that list.
Everyone I speak to around the league privately agrees that it doesn’t truly hold up as a genuine championship… The champion will forever be marked by an asterisk.
Daryl Morey told The Athletic’s Joe Vardon

Ironically, in that article, except for the Philadelphia 76ers GM, every other person Vardon spoke to believed that circumstances made that championship the toughest to win. However, Morey did say that he would have celebrated had his Rockets won.
Fans slam Daryl Morey for placing asterisk on LeBron James’ bubble championship
When excerpts of this interview reached social media, fans were quick to slam Daryl Morey. They believe he, along with the other executives who did not win the championship, were just jealous that LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers managed to take full advantage of the bubble and win that title.
Had his Rockets one, Morey would have been doing everything to defend it. So would the other executives. They called out the Sixers GM for displaying pure pettiness, especially when other players who have been a part of that Lakers team and won titles elsewhere have claimed it was the toughest.
Fans believe this was just a jealous Morey trying to prove his worth since he has not won anything in his career. Check out examples of those reactions below.
He hasn’t won anything in his life

The Lakers were the best team before the bubble

Probably would have won it regardless
The bubble is only hated because LeBron and the Lakers won it. It was easily one of the toughest championships ever. No distractions, just pure, authentic basketball.

He said it’s a fluke unless the rockets won it then it would’ve been real😭

If any other team would've won, this wouldn't be a topic

I don’t know why people don’t understand that this championship was harder to earn for multiple reasons

isnt this man a liar?

Only time in the league where all the players were fully focused on basketball or at least all other distractions severally minimized…

That’s why we had people playing like prime MJ and have never done it again.
There might be many whose views resonate with Daryl Morey and the other league executives who believe that the 2020 championship should have an asterisk beside it. They believe the setting was not up to the standards, as other teams have won their respective titles.
Many NBA stars believe LeBron James’ 2020 title was legit
Whatever those executives, members of the media, and fans who believe the 2020 NBA title should have an asterisk, others have provided counterpoints to suggest that the championship was the hardest to win.

Shaquille O’Neal once claimed that if that 2020 championship was not legitimate, then the championships won during lockout seasons should also not matter. Not many have contradicted his logic, as it could open another can of worms.
Then there were three players, namely, Rajon Rondo, Danny Green, and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope. Both were part of that 2020 championship-winning team and have won titles elsewhere. Both of them reiterated that the bubble was the hardest title to win.
It seems players, particularly those who have won titles, have a different opinion about the 2020 NBA bubble compared to those who have not won anything. Daryl Morey has seemingly placed himself on the latter list and could continue to face brickbats unless he wins a title.
