Dave Roberts will likely go down as one of the greatest managers in MLB history. On Tuesday, the Los Angeles Dodgers manager picked up his 1,000th win and became the fastest person to reach this historic milestone.

Following a 10-year career as a player, Roberts joined the San Diego Padres as a coach. On June 15, 2015, the Japan-born American international managed a game for the first time as an interim manager. This role was just one game, as he returned to his coaching duties for the rest of the year.

The Dodgers then named him as their manager in 2016. The rest, as they say, is history. In his debut season, the Los Angeles-based side went 91-61 and reached the National League Championship Series (NLCS), where they lost to eventual World Series winners, the Chicago Cubs.

Despite that playoff loss, Roberts was named the National League Manager of the Year. Next season, the Dodgers went 104-58 and lost in Game 7 of the World Series against the Houston Astros. There is some controversy regarding this loss, as the Astros were later found to be stealing signs from the opposition.

2018 saw Roberts and the Dodgers lose in the World Series again. This time, they lost 4-1 against the Boston Red Sox. Following a National League Division Series (NLDS) series loss against the Washington Nationals in 2019, there were some questions about whether he could lead the team over the finishing line.

The 2020 season finally brought the championship back to LA. In a COVID-shortened season, Roberts guided the team to their first World Series title since 1988.

This triumph was followed with 3 successive 100-or-more-wins seasons. However, the team once again stumbled in the playoffs. In the last 2 years, though, they were the team to beat.

In 2024, they blew aside the New York Yankees 4-1 to win the World Series again. Last year, they joined an elite list of teams to defend their title as they overcame the Toronto Blue Jays in an intense Game 7 to go back-to-back and repeat as champions.

The bid for a historic three-peat is so far going strong for the Dodgers. On Tuesday, they won 9-3 against the Athletics at Sutter Health Park and improved their record to 56-30. Roberts’ 1,000th win came in his 1,606th in charge as manager.

He thus became the fastest manager in MLB history to reach this mark. The previous record belonged to Cap Anson, who clinched his 1,000th win in 1,641 games.

Roberts is the 69th manager in MLB history to have 1,000 wins in their managerial career. His .623 winning percentage is the best among the other managers in the 1,000-win club.

Under his reign, the only time the Dodgers failed to be NL West Champions was in 2021 when they finished with an astonishing 106-56 record. The San Francisco Giants won the division that year, finishing 1 game ahead of their rivals with a 107-55 record.

Dave Roberts claims 1,000 wins was not on his radar

Dave Roberts joined an exclusive list of managers on Tuesday following his 1,000th win. The 54-year-old later revealed that this margin was never on his radar.

While speaking with the reporters after the game, he used the words “mind-blowing” to express his emotions on reaching this huge mark.

I mean, 1,000 didn’t even seem on my radar. That’s a long time of consistent winning, let alone keeping a job for 11 years. That’s just kind of the life I chose. But yeah, to kind of put your head down and look back and go, ‘Oh my god, I’m here,’ it’s mind-blowing.

Dave Roberts told the reporters

In the locker room, Roberts later gave a heartfelt speech. He would raise a glass for all the players he managed in his 11-year tenure as the manager. He then thanked them for their contributions and said that he was “blessed” with great players.

What makes a great coach or manager? Great players. I’ve been blessed with great players

Dave Roberts said in the Dodgers’ locker room

Speaking of the 2026 season, the Dodgers have the best record in the league and are 12 games ahead of the San Diego Padres in first place. They are aiming for a three-peat of the title and trying to become just the third team in MLB after the Yankees and the Athletics to win 3 successive championships.
