David Benavidez is an undefeated two-time WBC champion known for his size and power. He has beaten contenders and former champions, establishing himself as a leading figure in the light heavyweight division. A recurring theme in his career has been a middleweight superfight with Canelo Alvarez, which has yet to happen. Recently, Benavidez revealed that a major fight deal with Alvarez was proposed but never finalized.
Benavidez has long expressed his desire to fight Alvarez, repeatedly calling for a matchup at the top of the super middleweight division. Alvarez has agreed to face him on several occasions. Despite this, Benavidez has criticized the Mexican superstar for avoiding the fight and handpicking opponents. Disagreements over scheduling and opponent selection have defined the rivalry between the two.
Alvarez is one of boxing’s biggest draws, with a net worth approaching $300 million as of 2025. His wealth is reflected in a luxurious lifestyle, from high-end properties to premium vehicles. For a superstar of his status, the price tag for a superfight is naturally very high. Benavidez recently appeared on popular streamer N3on’s broadcast and revealed that a $150 million fight offer was made to Alvarez.

Benavidez is one of the most dangerous punchers in the super middleweight division and remains undefeated at 31‑0. He defended his WBC light heavyweight title against Anthony Yarde in November 2025. Six years younger than Alvarez, he combines youth with power, making him a serious threat in any matchup. His record and recent performances reinforce his status as a top fighter in boxing.
Alvarez is widely regarded as one of boxing’s all-time greats, having won titles in multiple weight divisions. In September 2025, he suffered the third loss of his career against Terence Crawford, in which he lost all four of his super middleweight titles and ended his run as the undisputed champion at 168 pounds. Alvarez’s record now stands at 63 wins, 3 losses, and 2 draws, reflecting years of toil and success at the top.
David Benavidez is now set to face WBA and WBO cruiserweight champion Gilberto Ramirez on May 2, 2026, while Alvarez does not have a fight officially announced. Boxing promoter Turki Allashikh has indicated that Alvarez plans to continue fighting for another five to six years and is aiming for a major bout in September. It remains uncertain whether Benavidez will finally secure the superfight he has long sought.
David Benavidez reveals the toughest opponent of his career
David Benavidez faced Caleb Plant on March 25, 2023, at the MGM Grand Garden Arena for the interim WBC super middleweight title. Benavidez applied pressure and landed more punches, wearing Plant down over the rounds. He won by unanimous decision with scores of 117‑111, 116‑112, and 115‑113. The fight tested Benavidez’s endurance and marked a significant victory over a former champion.

The bout was pivotal for Benavidez as his first defense of the interim WBC super middleweight title. By the final rounds, Plant showed visible scars and signs of wear, while Benavidez remained largely unmarked. The fight tested ‘El Monstro’ with sustained pressure and strategic exchanges over twelve rounds. He recently spoke about how the bout was one of the most challenging tests of his career.
Who was the toughest fight? Everybody kind of has a lot of different stuff that they do, I would say that probably the hardest fight that I have had was with Caleb Plant. It was such a big moment, there was a lot of animosity towards each other and he is a great fighter. He fought a good fight, we had a great performance, both of us.

After the bout, Benavidez continued on a strong trajectory, going on a four-fight win streak across super middleweight and light heavyweight divisions. Plant rebounded with a knockout victory over Trevor McCumby but then lost to Armando Resendiz in his most recent fight in June 2025. The divergent paths highlight Benavidez’s consistency and upward momentum compared to Plant’s mixed results.
