David ‘The Mexican Monster’ Benavidez climbed to the top of the super-middleweight division when he was 20 years old. As such, he followed in the footsteps of his idol, Mike Tyson, and became a world champion at the age of 20, but in another division. This only happened because the Mexican Monster has been training hard since he was a kid. Furthermore, surprisingly, Benavidez’s resume also includes sparring with Gennady ‘GGG’ Golovkin at 15 years old.
Benavidez used to be overweight once and had quite a body transformation. As such, when he was 15 years old, Benavidez used to weigh 260 lbs. This happened because he stopped training for two years and had an unhealthy lifestyle. However, later he resumed training, and during this phase, he sparred with Golovkin.
I remember putting my gloves on, bro, and he's across the ring from over me. I look over at him, bro, and he gives me like the coldest, scariest stare ever.David Benavidez via Cigar Talk
Benavidez recalled how he had just turned 15 two weeks ago, and GGG hadn’t yet made his US debut. Before the sparring started, the Mexican monster remembered the cold stare that Golovkin was well known for. Furthermore, the young boxer was surprised to be able to hold his ground against GGG even at 15 years old.
This was quite surprising since GGG was 30 years old when he sparred against David Benavidez. The Mexican Monster revealed moments where he hit Golovin with solid shots. In addition, he also mentioned both of them landing a left hook, which caused them to maintain some distance while sparring.
Canelo Alvarez speaks about the Benavidez fight
Benavidez sparring with GGG, of course, brings up the topic of Alvarez since he has fought against Golovkin as a professional three times. All those fights were a hard test for Alvarez since GGG is a skilled and durable fighter. Hence, since Benavidez stood his ground against GGG, one could argue that he could do the same against Alvarez.
While the entire boxing world wants this fight to happen, Canelo Alvarez does not. This is mainly because he feels that he has nothing left to prove in terms of his career. However, fans have called this an excuse and accused Canelo of ducking Benavidez.
In response, Alvarez believed he had to face this criticism every few years of his career. He remarked that every time it is a different fighter. Alvarez also stated that people who criticize him for avoiding Benavidez aren’t his fans.
