After more than 13 months without a club, former Manchester United keeper David de Gea has finally found an employer. The 33-year-old was unexpectedly let go of by his former club back in July 2023 upon expiration of his contract. While many thought that the Spaniard would instantly be picked up by a top club, it was disheartening to see him without a team for more than a year to follow.

As things stand, De Gea is no longer a free agent, with Serie A side Fiorentina finally striking a deal with the former United keeper. As per Fabrizio Romano‘s report, the player has flown to Italy to undergo his medical and sign the contract. The deal proposed by the club will keep him at Fiorentina till 2025, with an option to extend till 2026.

De Gea has found a club after failed negotiations with several clubs including the likes of Genoa, Al-Nassr and Newcastle United. It is understood that the player held on for so long as he wanted a primary role in a top club that competes for a Champions League spot.

With money not being the issue, he also turned down the opportunity to play alongside Cristiano Ronaldo in the Saudi Pro League.

David De Gea ‘finally’ reduces unrealistic salary expectations to join eighth-placed club

As David de Gea put pen to paper for new club Fiorentina, news broke of the player ‘finally’ agreeing to reduce his expected salary. As per reports, the Premier League champion has agreed to a salary close to €3 million, as opposed to his whopping £375,000 per week wages at Manchester United.

Although the player was close to signing for Genoa CFC, it is claimed that the deal fell through because of his extremely high expectations of a salary. After finishing in eighth spot, his club will not be competing in Europe. Fans are hopeful that the player will help the team to a top four finish as Fiorentina go into the 2024/25 season.

The club accumulated a total of 60 points in 38 games, with a goal difference of 15. ACF Fiorentina also conceded 46 goals throughout the campaign, which is the third highest for any club in the top ten.

It is interesting to note that De Gea let in 43 goals in his last season at the club. With the experienced keeper coming into the club, it will only be fitting if the Italians find a way to improve in their defensive department.
