Following a tumultuous exit from Manchester United, David de Gea might make a comeback to first-team football. Recent reports suggest that the 32-year-old Goalkeeper was approached by Cristiano Ronaldo in an effort to convince the player to join Al-Nassr. However, it is understood that the player prefers to stay in Europe and has ‘turned down’ Cristiano’s offer.
David de Gea‘s exit from Old Trafford was nothing short of chaotic. The club decided to part ways with the player after 12 years together. It was recently reported that the Spaniard was considering retirement unless he receives a substantial offer from a top club in Europe, and is offered a starting role in the squad. De Gea is reportedly set to wait until the January transfer window, but if no offers present themselves, is ready to consider retirement.
The current Golden Glove winner still remains a free agent and was largely criticized for his inability to play out from the back and poor footwork, for which Andre Onana was brought in for a fee of £47.2 million fee. As for Al-Nassr, Nawaf Alaqidi is their starting Goalkeeper, backed up by David Ospina and Waleed Abdullah. The club currently has no spots open for a foreign Goalkeeper as well.
Andre Onana: “Not Perfect but Good Enough”
David de Gea’s departure was followed by the arrival of shot-stopper Andre Onana from Inter Milan. Fresh off the back of a Champions League Final run, the 27-year-old was brought in as the quick fix to Old Trafford‘s woes at the Goalkeeper position. However, the Cameroonian has had a shaky start to life at United. He has let in 14 goals in just 6 games for the club.
Guillem Balague, a BBC Journalist, said that United doesn’t have a proper idea of how to defend itself, and the blame is often shifted to Onana. “In time, we’ll see the true value of Onana,” said Balague. Reporter James Horncastle said that Onana was a strong character and that his decision to take culpability for the defeat against Bayern showed his strong character.
“He’s not the perfect goalkeeper but good enough for Man Utd,” said Horncastle. He admitted that Onana is unorthodox when it comes to technique. He added that this causes errors which sometimes end up in goals conceded. However, he urged Old Trafford to support their £47.2 million goalkeeper.
