Detroit Lions have signed an extension for running back David Montgomery to a two-year, $18.25M contract ahead of their next game. The Lions are playing the Dallas Cowboys in Week 6 after a bye week on SNF.
The Chicago Bears drafted the 27-year-old RB in the third round in 2019. He joined the Detroit Lions in 2023, helping them into a historic postseason run. Montgomery had two years remaining on the three-year, $18 million contract he signed as a free agent in 2023. The extension comes a few days after the RB spoke about having suicidal thoughts because of fantasy football pressure.
In 2023, Montgomery made instant success, a key reason of this new extension. He rushed for 1,015 yards on 219 carries and scored 13 touchdowns. In the playoffs, he averaged 4.7 yards per carry, helping the Lions reach the NFC Championship Game.
The Detroit Lions have been phenomenal in this season. They have continued the charm from last year, winning three through four games. Montgomery’s rushed for 271 yards and scored four touchdowns. He caught nine passes for 94 yards, including a tough 40-yard gain against the Seahawks in Week 4.

The Lions are well equipped in terms of the running back depth. Jahmyr Gibbs is still on his rookie deal, along with the possibility of a fifth-year option for the 2027 season. With “Sonic and Knuckles“, the Lions maintain the only pair of RBs on the same team who both rank in the top 20 of the league’s total rushing leaders.
Fans are eclectic over the David Montgomery deal
David Montgomery’s new deal has made him the seventh highest paid running back in NFL in terms of money per year. His extension has been received pretty well by the fans in all aspects including his pay. They have expressed their approval on socials, as the Lions face the Cowboys on Sunday.
The Lions are receiving praise for the deal, noting that David Montgomery absolutely deserves the pay and the position. They also expressed happiness in seeing more Montgomery action in Detroit.
The Lions have an extremely clear identity as a franchise.

However, some have alluded that Montgomery deserved more than what he was paid. A fan, nevertheless, noted that he respects Montgomery for taking less.
He deserved a little more but respect for taking less

The Detroit Lions are fresh coming into Week 6 after a bye week preceded by a magnanimous win. The Lions, led by Jared Goff’s perfect MNF that started the Seattle Seahawk’s crumble, are a strong Super Bowl contender. The assured depth is going to a weapon as they look forward to bid adieu last year’s bad dreams.
