NFL teams can try as hard as they can to lure David Njoku away from the Cleveland Browns, but he is not ready to ditch them just yet. Njoku remains committed to the Browns.
That doesn’t mean his heart didn’t flutter after hearing the whispers about a possible trade. In fact, he was terrified of the idea of packing his bags and playing somewhere else.
#Browns TE David Njoku said he’s happy he wasn’t traded, wants an extension. Joked he was terrified until the deadline passed. The Browns never intended to trade him.

The trade deadline ended on Tuesday, November 4, and Njoku’s status as a Browns player remained intact. Speaking with reporters on Wednesday, Njoku uttered multiple times that he was happy to be part of the Browns even though they are 2-6 and rooted to the bottom of the AFC North.
Of course [a trade] is a possibility. But I’m in Cleveland, baby. I’m not going nowhere. I ain’t f***ing leaving.

Njoku has spent his entire career in Cleveland since being drafted 29th overall in 2017. During that period, the Browns have been 55-84-1 with two trips to the playoffs.
#Browns TE David Njoku was VERY passionate about not being traded yesterday. He knew it was a possibility, but he said he never wants to leave. He hopes he can work out an extension.

David Njoku’s contract will come to an end soon
Njoku’s numbers may not scream elite at first glance, but he plays with gusto that’s rarely found in players. NFL teams always look for that ‘It’ factor, and Njoku brings that week in and week out.

Losing a player like Njoku would be a big loss for a franchise like the Browns that doesn’t have many big-name players on the offense. If fans exclude Shedeur Sanders from the picture, the only other name that comes to mind is wide receiver Jerry Jeudy, who was also linked with a move away.
So, it’s a no-brainer for the Browns to safeguard Njoku. But for how long? Njoku’s current four-year, $56.75 million contract expires after this year, which means he will become an unrestricted free agent and be free to sign with any other NFL team.
When reporters asked Njoku about an extension, he replied, “I can’t say,” and he showed off his custom-made jewelry adorned with the flags of Nigeria and the state of Ohio.
It says [No.] 85 with the Nigerian flag, but it’s also the state of Ohio. You didn’t see that, huh? It’s nice, isn’t it?

Njoku has played 7 games in 2025. In those games, he has racked up 27 catches from 41 targets for 260 yards and 2 touchdowns. He is only behind rookie tight end Harold Fannin Jr., who has 38 receptions, 352 yards, and two touchdowns.
Despite the slow start to the season, the Browns made just one trade leading up to the deadline. They traded defensive end Joe Tryon-Shoyinka and a seventh-round draft pick to the Chicago Bears in exchange for a sixth-round pick.

Week 9 was a bye for the Browns. In the following week, they play against the 1-7 New York Jets. The Browns lead the series 16-14 in the previous 30 meetings. Despite having the worst record in the league, the Jets are 1.5-point favorites to secure a win at MetLife Stadium.
On December 28, 2023, Joe Flacco led the Browns to a 37-20 victory over the Jets. Of course, Flacco was traded to the Bengals earlier in the season. Since his departure, rookie Dillon Gabriel has been the QB1 and, barring any drastic change, may start in New York as well.
