Elena Rybakina‘s coach, Davide Sanguinetti, during a recent interview, compared Italian tennis players with fictional movie characters, as well as historical figures. He called World No.1 Jannik Sinner a war machine.
Sinner has started his preparation for the Cincinnati Masters, where he will aim to win his second title in a row. His compatriots Matteo Berrettini and Luciano Darderi were last seen in action at Wimbledon and Umag, respectively, while Lorenzo Musetti, Matteo Arnaldi, and Flavio Cobolli participated at the Canadian Open.
Rybakina’s coach, Sanguinetti, a former player from Italy, during an interview with Super Tennis, compared Darderi and Arnaldi to Marvel’s Fantastic Four characters, and called Musetti, Vincent van Gogh (the famous Dutch artist known for his Post-Impressionist paintings) while Cobolli, according to him, is Billy the Kid (an American outlaw and gunfighter, also the inspiration behind many movies, books, radio dramas as well as comics).
I see Sinner as a war machine, Musetti as Van Gogh, Cobolli as Billy the Kid with his quick arm, Darderi as the Thing from Fantastic Four, and Arnaldi as Mister Fantastic…and let’s not forget Berrettini, who is having a special time.
In the ongoing Canadian Open, Cobolli’s run ended in the fourth round after a tense clash with fourth seed Ben Shelton. Third seed Musetti fell in five sets against Alex Michelsen in the third round. In the third round only, Arnaldi suffered a three-set defeat to first seed Alexander Zverev.
Except for Arnaldi, Musetti, and Berrettini, the rest of the players have lifted at least two titles. Sinner has played four finals so far this season, winning the Australian Open by beating Zverev and the Wimbledon by defeating arch-rival Carlos Alcaraz.
Patrick Mouratoglou says Carlos Alcaraz is more fiery than Jannik Sinner
Many would agree that Carlos Alcaraz is quite an unpredictable player. With so many weapons that he has in his arsenal, Alcaraz likes to take his opponents by surprise by hitting unexpected shots, especially his famous drop shots.

And this is why Serena Williams‘ former coach, Patrick Mouratoglou, during the Ultimate Tennis Showdown event in Guadalajara, explained why the young Spaniard plays differently than Sinner, a more consistent player. He also compared the five-time Grand Slam champion to Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic.
He drop shots, he comes to the net, unbelievable power, unbelievable touch, he can return, volley, and he does all this in a match. That’s crazy. So that’s very interesting. It’s never boring; something happens all the time. Of course, he’s not as consistent as Rafa and Novak at their peak, or Sinner now, who’s incredibly consistent, but he’s more fiery.
Nadal called time on his career at the Davis Cup last year. Djokovic was last seen in action at Wimbledon, where, for the first time since 2017, he failed to progress to the final. Sinner ended his campaign with a straight-set win in the semifinal.
While Sinner and Alcaraz are gearing up for the Cincinnati Open, Djokovic has decided to pull out of the tournament, where he last played in 2023 and beat Alcaraz in the final. The 38-year-old will continue his hunt for his 25th Grand Slam title at the US Open, where he last lifted the title in 2023 (also his 24th Major).
Just like Sinner, Alcaraz too has skipped the Canadian Open to focus on more rest and recovery before kicking off his campaign on the North American hard-court swing. Alcaraz has so far taken home the Rotterdam Open, Monte Carlo Masters, Italian Open, French Open, and the Queen’s Club Championships. At Wimbledon, Sinner denied him a three-peat with a four-set win, avenging his French Open final defeat.
