IPL 2021: Delhi Capitals sign Anirudha Joshi as replacement for Shreyas Iyer; Shams Mulani joins as short-term replacement for Axar Patel

Delhi Capitals (DC) have replaced their injured skipper Shreyas Iyer with Anirudha Joshi while they have also acquired Shams Mulani as a short-term replacement for Axar Patel who has been affected by COVID-19. The replacements were named just ahead of today’s Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 clash between DC and Rajasthan Royals (RR) at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

Shreyas Iyer was ruled out of the tournament last month when he picked up a shoulder injury during India’s ODI series against England while trying to field a ball. He then had to undergo surgery on his shoulder which was completed successfully on the 8th of April. Meanwhile, Axar Patel contracted COVID-19 ahead of the tournament and the recovery has taken quite some team for the all-rounder.

Axar Patel has been replaced on a short-term basis with a like-for-like player in Shams Mulani who is also a left-arm orthodox spinner and an explosive batsman lower down the order. The signing is based on IPL’s Player Regulation No. 6.1 (c) which states that a franchise can sign a short-term replacement until the original squad member recovers from COVID-19 and reenters the bio-bubble.

Shreyas Iyer’s replacement Anirudha Joshi on the other hand, is also a batsman like the player he has replaced. He was previously a part of the Royal Challengers Bangalore franchise in 2018 but didn’t get a game. He would now be looking to make a mark if he gets a chance to feature in the playing XI over the course of the season.
