Since moving to Taiwan to seek a new experience, NBA All-Star DeMarcus Cousins has stayed under the radar. Lately, though, he has opened up about his childhood and growing up without a father. He also talked about his own approach to the duties of parenting and fatherhood.

Cousins appeared in a recent episode of Draymond Green‘s podcast, where he revealed his feelings on being a father. When asked about his relationship with his dad as a child, he said:

With my pops, I know who he is, but the relationship is non-existent at this point... But I do learn from it. I do take things from our relationship, and I don't take it in a way of trying to apply it to my life. But I actually want to do the opposite. Being a father, it means so much to me that it's actually an insecurity for me.

According to him, growing up as a child was far from ideal as his father was never in the picture. DeMarcus Cousins pointed out that since his childhood memories weren’t great; he decided to be a good example for his kids. He further stated that because fatherhood means a lot to him, it brings feelings of insecurity too.

The 34-year-old also told Green that sometimes there’s a feeling he’s not doing it correctly. While adding that he doesn’t know if his kids are getting the right message always. Cousins last played in the NBA for the Milwaukee Bucks, in the 2021-22 season. After that season, he eventually headed out to Puerto Rico where he signed for the Guaynabo Mets. Soon thereafter, he joined the Taiwan Beer Leopards in December 2023.

DeMarcus Cousins shares the only regret in his career

Following a career spanning 12 seasons in the NBA, DeMarcus Cousins has come a long way. Regarded as one of the best centers in the league then, he’s seen the ups and downs of the game. But while many basketball players would likely have had many regrets over the years, he only recalls just one.

While revealing this on the podcast, the 4-time All-Star recounted the time he pressed an elderly reporter too hard.

It was a year in Sacramento... and it was this f*****g reporter bro, named Andy Furillo. And this guy made it a mission to make sure he gave me hit piece after hit piece... So, he then kinda switched lanes and was speaking on a family member and I'm super sensitive about my family... So I definitely pressed that old man a little too hard.

As stated by Boogie Cousins, family is a sensitive topic to him, and he lost it when the reporter went that route. Looking back on that time now, he admits going too far. The way he sees it, elders should always be respected, and that man was no exception.
