Joe Gibbs Racing veteran Denny Hamlin secured the 62nd Cup race win of his racing career last Sunday at Nashville, which also marked his as well as Toyota’s maiden win at the track. He overcomes a three-car battle on the last lap featuring teammates Christopher Bell and Chase Briscoe, on the way to the triumph.

In the most Hamlin-fashion as possible, the veteran made some comments post-win on his podcast that has made some people to raise the eyebrows. He wants the sport to reduce the length of some of races, including the one ins Nashville. The veteran defended his claim by highlighting how some races last longer than the rest, because the track makes the cars slower.

Another thing if I’m the CEO of NASCAR, when you look at the length of the races, the math doesn’t math to me. … While you’re running the same laps, the mileage is the same, the Whatever 400, but if you’re running a slower pace, it takes you longer to get to that 400 miles.

Denny Hamlin said on his podcast.

The Joe Gibbs Racing veteran asserted that in the tracks like Michigan, the cars are running faster than tracks like Nashville. This has to do with the difference in lap time and speed, something according to Denny Hamlin NASCAR needs to take into consideration.

So, on a normal mile and a half that we run a 400-mile race, like at Michigan this weekend, that race will be two-thirds of the time this one takes because we’re running so much faster. It’s about lap time and speed versus mileage.

The 23XI Racing co-owner got the wild solution for the supposed problem. He wants the races at slower tracks to be 300 miles run instead of the 400 miles. One major issue with the proposal in the fact that the fans don’t want the same type of racing every week and the unique properties of each track needs to be protected.

So, at a track like this, it should be 300 miles, because you’re running a slower pace. In the time that you can run 300 miles at Nashville, you can run 400 miles at Michigan. So … the math just doesn’t math to me. This is why this race, the math doesn’t math to me.

Denny Hamlin asserted.

Denny Hamlin warns Shane van Gisbergen after aggressive Nashville run

In the same podcast, Hamlin also talked about Shane van Gisbergen who had the career best run of his racing career. He secured his maiden top-5 finish and showed he is now capable of being aggressive against the seasoned veterans. But the JGR driver send SVG a warning, highlighting that the racer’s won’t hesitate respond if he doesn’t balance the aggression.

SVG had another good race, I tell you, he’s putting himself in some spots, though. He’s also sticking it in there like late on corner entries, where he’s putting his competition in some not great spots. I saw him and Chase [Elliott] on the last lap, I think he ran into him two or three times, I would just give warning that like eventually, they’re not going to let you just keep doing that without retaliating on you. Maybe they won’t say it on the radio, but just be careful of that SVG.

Denny Hamlin said on his podcast.

The comments from the veteran racer are on point and shows how he cares about the Kiwi racer, who is slowly but surly building a legendary career in the Cup Series. It would be interesting to see how SVG is going to take the advice from Hamlin and how he is going to race in the coming races.
