The Denver Nuggets exited the 2nd round of the playoffs even though their goal was to repeat as NBA champions. Much before their exit, many analysts had pointed out their lack of a bench that ultimately led to their season-ending early. Now, as they head into this season, they have not made significant additions. Instead, they are about to lose one of the most important cogs of their 2023 NBA title. That has prompted them to look at Russell Westbrook as a potential target, as per Jake Fischer of Yahoo Sports.

All throughout the regular season, Russell Westbrook was seen as one of the most important players on the Los Angeles Clippers. His willingness to lead their bench and at the same time be their de factor vocal leader helped the Clippers to at one point be the best team in the West. The drop in performance and eventual 1st round exit was not solely due to the triple-double king performances. Therefore, the Nuggets want to bring him in so that he can lead their bench again.

They will need that oomph factor whenever their second unit takes to the floor. Someone who can motivate and rile them up to keep the game in their hands. Westbrook’s high-energy play could also galvanize the starters to play better.

Another advantage the Nuggets can get out of the former league MVP is that he might come on a bargain contract. If anything, that could gloss over his reduction in overall play. Westbrook does not shoot the ball like before. But he can do many other things which can help the Nuggets.

Fans are not happy with Nuggets targeting Russell Westbrook

Basketball fans, on the other hand, feel that Westbrook will not be a good fit for the Denver Nuggets. The former scoring champion prefers the faster game. The Nuggets, on the contrary, play at a much slower pace. His drop in shooting performance is also a concern for fans. Then there is the age factor and possible injury problems.
