Kobe Bryant’s Former Teammate Defends LeBron James’ Ring-Chasing Narrative After Joining 76ers

Some critics have been claiming that LeBron James is 'cheating' his way to a ring after joining the Philadelphia 76ers.

From the list of all the teams LeBron James was set to join, it was no secret that all of them would become instant NBA championship contenders the moment he signed.

Every team has its merits and demerits, where some may need a year to get into the rhythm of playing alongside the league’s all-time leading scorer. Others, such as the Philadelphia 76ers, have a roster that makes them favorites to dethrone the defending champion New York Knicks.

The moment ‘The King’ announced that he would be signing a two-year deal with the Pennsylvania-based team, everyone posted opinions and clips on how the 76ers are now a superteam.

With that came criticisms that the father of three had made it a habit of joining superteams, and this was his way of cheating in his quest to add more rings to his collection. But one former player, who won five championships alongside the great Kobe Bryant, said this:

You’re not ring chasing when you’re the guy that creates the rings!

The former point guard brought up Kareem Abdul-Jabbar‘s example to reiterate that the legend was not ring-chasing when he joined the Lakers. Instead, he brought championships to the franchise.

On the same note, LeBron James is not joining a team that has been winning championships. Rather, his joining them makes them favorites. Before he did so, they were not considered one, even though they just brought in Jaylen Brown.

That, to Derek Fisher, is confirmation that if the 76ers do win a championship, it will be because of James, rather than him just being another member of the team.

Magic Johnson believes LeBron James makes 76ers favorites

Derek Fisher joins former teammate Shaquille O’Neal as the second ex-Laker to dispel any notions that LeBron James is ring chasing. Another franchise great, Magic Johnson, gave his opinion on how his former free agent signee will turn the 76ers into a behemoth.

LeBron makes the Sixers one of the best teams in the NBA and the biggest threat to the World Champion Knicks in the Eastern Conference.

The Hall of Famer did mention how he will be ‘interested’ to see how a team full of ball-dominant players is going to work together. He then went on to add two questions to that mix.

Johnson wondered what the defensive makeup of the 76ers will be. He also asked if the team will be able to build enough chemistry in time to contend for the title.

While he still believes that the Knicks are favored to defend their title, the electric point guard predicts that once these problems are solved, the Sixers will be a difficult bunch to beat.

Former college player slams Charles Barkley’s LeBron James stacked teams narratives

While these former Lakers are quietly letting it be known that the LeBron James ring-chasing narratives are incorrect, a former college player particularly took aim at a certain Charles Barkley for criticizing James’ decision to join a ‘stacked team.’

Kevin Johnson was an All-Pro three years before you got there. Dan Marley was an all-league defender and an All-Star before you got there… This was a team that was consistently winning three straight years, 54 games a year. You were the difference in getting them over the hump… They were awesome. They won the Western Conference championship in 1990.

The Utah State alum then clarified that when the four-time league MVP honored every contract he had with his former teams, how is it a problem when Barkley forced himself out of the 76ers during his prime? It seems more and more former players are coming out to defend James, while also admonishing those who are creating narratives to satisfy their motives.
