Just like records, undefeated streaks are meant to be broken. The Minnesota Vikings have dominated the NFL through the first five weeks of the season having beaten all of their opponents. However, tonight the team met its match in the form of the Detroit Lions.
The Lions are coming off a dominant 47-9 performance over the Dallas Cowboys last week and continue to play their best football against Sam Darnold and the Vikings. Jared Goff had yet another remarkable outing as he completed 22 of 25 throws for 280 yards and had 2 touchdowns. Their running game added another 2 touchdowns to add on to the team’s total tally.
The Vikings, true to their name put up a solid fight with Sam Darnold throwing for 259 yards and 1 touchdown. An interception did set them back a bit but irrespective, the game came down to the wire.

Lions’ Jake Bates was the hero for Detroit with his clutch field goal
The Vikings stepped up the heat in the fourth quarter. The team scored 9 of its 29 points in the final 15 minutes of the game. However, the team’s 2-point attempt conversion attempt after Ivan Pace Jr.’s 36-yard fumble return for a touchdown fell short.
With under 6 minutes left in the matchup, Jared Goff and the Lions regained possession of the ball. The team was able to set itself up in field goal range and with 15 seconds left, Jake Bates sealed the Lions’ 5th victory of the season by converting the 44-yard field goal.
With this win, Dan Campbell and the Lions continue to make a statement to the NFL that this year, Detroit is back and is better than ever. This team is complete and is a legitimate Super Bowl contender.
The Lions lead the NFC North with the Vikings trailing them after Sunday’s win. Tonight’s game was the team’s first outing without defensive end Aidan Hutchinson. He sustained a brutal leg injury in the team’s win over Dallas last week.
He had to undergo emergency surgery to fix his tibia and fibula which will render him unavailable for at least 4-6 months. The Lions will now head back to Ford Field to recover and prepare for the Tennessee Titans next Sunday.
