Indian javelin Paralympic thrower, Devendra Jhajharia is all set to claim his third Paralympics gold medal at the upcoming Tokyo Paralympics. The reigning Paralympics champion competes in the F46 javelin throw category.

Jhajharia is not a novice when it comes to bringing home laurels. He was the gold medallist at the 2004 Athens and 2016 Rio Games. The 40-year-old has broken his own world records multiple times with the latest one created just a month ago at the National Paralympic Trials, New Delhi with a brilliant throw of 65.71 m.

Jhajharia was born on 10th June 1981 and hails from Churu district, Rajasthan. When he was 8 years old while climbing a tree he touched a live electric cable. Although he received medical attention, doctors were forced to amputate his left hand.

In 1997, Devendra Jhajharia was spotted by Dronacharya awardee, R D Singh while participating in a school sports day. And since then Jhajharia hasn’t looked back. In 2002, the javelin thrower won the gold at the 8th FESPIC Games in South Korea.

At the tender age of 23, Jhajharia won his first Paralympic gold medal at the 2004 Athens Games becoming only the second Indian to win a gold medal at the Paralympics. At the coveted tournament, he recorded history after creating a new world record of 62.15m by shattering the previous one of 59.77m.

More success came in 2013 with a shining gold medal at the IPC Athletics World Championships in Lyon, France. A gold medal at the 2014 Asian Para Games in Incheon, South Korea followed. In 2015, he bagged a silver medal at the IPC Athletics World Championships. However, Jhajharia came back with a bang with a gold at the 2016 IPC Athletics Asia-Oceania Championship in Dubai.

Paralympic success came his way almost 12 years later at the 2016 Rio Games. In Rio, Jhajharia not only clinched the glorious gold medal but also bettered his own world record set in Athens with an awe-striking throw of 63.97m. He became the first Indian Paralympian to win two gold medals at the Paralympics.

Now, just a month ago at the National Paralympic Trials, New Delhi, the 40-year-old again improved on his record by throwing the javelin at the 65.71m mark.
