After the Phoenix Mercury were eliminated from the playoff race, they announced that they were letting DeWanna Bonner off her contract so that she could join a championship contender.
The 39-year-old has been in the league for 17 seasons and is possibly about to call it a career. She has two championships to her name, along with several individual accolades.
Moreover, she has been playing overseas for most of her career, which means the mileage on her body is unlike what new-generation athletes earning millions experience.
Her twin daughters are also growing up. Therefore, she possibly wants to retire. Otherwise, it makes no sense for her to leave the team her fiancée is on. After all, she was part of the Indiana Fever before controversially leaving to reunite with Alyssa Thomas on the Mercury.
Therefore, it is pretty clear that she wants to give a go at the championship one last time. To do that, she had quite a few teams that could sign her. Among them, the only sensible options were the Las Vegas Aces, who just lost NaLyssa Smith to a knee injury, and the Atlanta Dream, who have the cap space to bring her in.

The franchise has five players on rookie deals, including superstar Angel Reese. That is the flexibility that allowed them to win the race to sign DeWanna Bonner. However, to clear a roster spot, they might have to send one of those younger players down to the developmental pool.
Fever fans fume at DeWanna Bonner’s decision to join the Dream
Although Las Vegas Aces fans might be disappointed to lose out on DeWanna Bonner, Indiana Fever fans were the ones tearing their hair off on social media.
The bad blood between the six-time All-Star and her former supporters is something that may not stop. They labeled her a quitter when she first left. Now, with the forward essentially becoming a significant addition to the Dream seems to have left them triggered.
After all, this is Bonner joining Caitlin Clark’s longtime rival, Angel Reese’s team. Knowing that the Dream is now a championship favorite led them to display their anger on the internet, examples of which are below.

How is this type of transaction allowed to occur with teams heading into the playoffs? Joke
— Drake (@El_Drakes5150) August 26, 2026
What a joke of a league. No other professional sport allows this to happen.

After the news first dropped that she was leaving the Mercury, some Fever fans did note that all would be forgotten if DeWanna Bonner rejoined their team and helped them in the title push. Now, that possibility no longer exists.
Angel Reese trolls Fever fans after DeWanna Bonner joins her team
Most Indiana Fever fans are hoping that Caitlin Clark and her teammates face the Atlanta Dream in the first round and end up defeating them. That motivation just grew once DeWanna Bonner joined.

If the regular season ended today, the Fever-Dream first-round battle would take place. But that is in the future, and Angel Reese wants to enjoy this win now. She took to X to post the silent laughter emoji.

That is her way to poke fun at the Fever fan base, who have been having their laugh all this time. After all, their leading superstar seemingly laughed at her in their last battle, and now Reese believes she will get her chance at revenge.
