In Short
  • The New York Giants and defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence have reached an impasse in contract negotiations.
  • Lawrence has requested a trade after seeking a significant salary increase from his current $21.8 million.
  • Giants GM Joe Schoen expresses a desire for Lawrence to remain with the team despite ongoing trade discussions.

The New York Giants are entering a new era under new head coach John Harbaugh, but they are also facing a problem involving longtime defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence.

Usually, when a Super Bowl-winning head coach joins a team, it indicates that he believes in the quality of the roster and in the players’ ability to help him re-establish himself as one of the best in the league.

So far, the vibes have been good, and players are excited by what the former Baltimore Ravens’ head coach is bringing to a franchise that has long forgotten how to win consistently.

But for an established superstar such as Dexter Lawrence, winning is not the only thing that motivates him. Having proven his worth time and again, he wants that to convert into currency he can enjoy and set aside for his family.

The Giants and star DL Dexter Lawrence, who have been talking about a new big-money extension, have reached an impasse, sources say. The Giants have engaged with teams on a potential trade and that will continue. It should come to a head before the Draft.

This was the lead NFL Insider revealing that the mountain of a man is putting his feet down about what he wants. After submitting a trade request a few weeks ago, there has been no change. He wants a significant raise from his $21.8 million salary.

Giants GM Joe Schoen hopes Dexter Lawrence stays

While the Giants have hit an ‘impasse’ over Dexter Lawrence’s salary negotiations, GM Joe Schoen believes that he and the franchise want to see their superstar nose tackle remain with them.

I’ll echo what coach said last week. We’d like for Dexter to be here, and at some point we’ll come to a resolution here, whatever that may be. We’ll see.

Ian Rapoport quoted Joe Schoen

With lead defensive tackles such as Chris Jones earning nearly $10 million more than what the Clemson Alum earns, he might want to earn that big contract soon.

After all, he is 28 years old and knows that he has the chance to earn a major raise now before injuries start to affect his career. The Giants also know that, but Schoen’s language suggests they would prefer he stay.

This could be just a way to convince the North Carolina native to take less and stay put. But with other players earning a lot more than him, despite not having the accolades he has, Dexter Lawrence might not be willing to settle for less.

Dexter Lawrence is key to the Giants’ defense

Dexter Lawrence might be entering a stage of his career where defensive linemen generally either start picking up injuries or their overall effectiveness takes a hit.

His last Pro Bowl selection was in 2024, where he posted a career-high nine sacks. This past season, that number came down abysmally to 0.5 sacks.

Even his overall tackles, QB hits, and tackles for losses dropped significantly. Teams usually do not give a pay raise based on those numbers. But with Dexter Lawrence, it is different. The numbers might not show, but the ease with which he eats up offensive lineman double teams for lunch is something very few D-tackles can do.

That allows the plethora of pass rushers around him to feast. Last season, their defense may not have had the numbers to prove that, but John Harbaugh will likely unlock their potential from the word go. That is why it is important to lock up the 340lb behemoth, as his performance on the field, and his leadership, are important if the Giants are to turn around after a trying season.
