Arch Manning faced the biggest test of his fledgling college career on his first day as the franchise quarterback for the Texans. He was tasked with defeating the reigning CFP champions, the Ohio State Buckeyes on Saturday (August 30).

It was a tough watch. Manning threw just 5 completions in nearly three full quarters of football. The Buckeyes’ defense, led by Super Bowl royalty Matt Patricia, made life hell for the Longhorns’ offense.

Peyton and Eli Manning, who live-streamed the Texas-Ohio State game, covered their faces to hide the disappointment. The Manning brothers’ reaction to seeing their nephew’s tough start went viral within moments.

However, the X community quickly challenged the authenticity of the clip. It turns out that Peyton and Eli’s reaction was from a game that took place in 2023 between the New York Giants and the Seattle Seahawks.

The quarterback in question was, in fact, Daniel Jones. Jones, now with the Colts via the Vikings, threw two interceptions (one pick-six) in the game that finished 24-3.

There was a hint staring right in the viewers’ faces. In the bottom left corner, under Eli’s bust, the screen flashed ‘MNF [Monday Night Football] on ESPN.’

As for Manning, he almost threw a second pick in the fourth quarter. Buckeyes Sonny Styles picked him off, but the referee overturned the call to keep Manning’s count to just one.

Manning ended the game with 17 completions from 30 for 170 yards, one touchdown, and one interception, along with 10 carries for 38 yards.

Lifelong Dallas Cowboys fan and vocal supporter of Arch Manning, Skip Bayless tweeted,

Final takeaway: Arch Manning was not consistently accurate today. Did not show consistent feel or touch. Did will two big late completions, one for a TD. But now you have to wonder about him being the No. 1 overall pick. Long way to go.

Arch Manning waited two years for his chance at Texas

Manning hails from a family of football players. His uncles, Peyton and Eli Manning, share four Super Bowls between them, while his grandfather, Archie, was an icon for the New Orleans Saints.

The 21-year-old sat behind Quinn Ewers during his first two seasons in Texas, making occasional off-the-bench appearances. Fans and analysts loved his gunslinger attitude and cannon of an arm.

Ewers suffered a terrible injury that kept him out for a couple of games midway through the 2024 season. Steve Sarkisian turned to Manning for help, and he delivered.

After completing four touchdowns in a 56-7 win over UTSA, Manning started and led Texas to two consecutive wins against Louisiana Monroe and Mississippi State. He threw over 550+ passing yards and 4 total passing touchdowns.

Football pundits were quick to draw comparisons between Manning and some of the greats of college football. ESPN contributor Paul Finebaum branded the five-star recruit from Isidore Newman as the best college quarterback prospect since two-time CFP champion Tim Tebow and Auburn legend and former NFL MVP Cam Newton.

Manning himself viewed himself more as a Joe Burrow– and Josh Allen-esque type of player. Naturally, the bar was set very high after Sarkisian handed the starting quarterback job to Manning after Ewers left for the NFL.

His idol Allen had a tough start to his college career as well. He had zero offers after high school and chose to attend Reedley Community College. The University of Wyoming football saw enough potential in Allen to award him a scholarship.

After playing just two games in his sophomore campaign, Allen finally blew up the year after. He went 16-9 in the final two years, catching the eyes of scouts from the Buffalo Bills. Since entering the NFL, Allen has bagged 2 All-Pro, 3 Pro Bowls, and the 2024 Offensive Player of the Year award.

Manning must stay patient. He will have loads of chances to redeem himself in week two against San Jose State. In week three, they face UTEP, followed by Sam Houston, and then the big SEC clash against Florida.
