Arch Manning threw 2 touchdowns and set up one more as the #1 Texas Longhorns picked up a 35-13 win over Mississippi State. It was also the first time Manning completed a touchdown pass against an SEC team.

The Longhorns were the overwhelming favorite to secure a win in front of the thousands of fans who packed the Texas Memorial Stadium on Saturday. It did not disappoint, even though there were some early hiccups from both teams.

For three quarters, the Texas run game was atrocious against one of the best rush defenses in college football. They fumbled twice on the run, making Longhorns fans fear the worst. Steve Sarkisian’s team eventually pulled themselves together to take a 6-21 lead at the end of the third quarter.

The 19-year-old, who was deputizing for the injured Quinn Ewers, started his second straight game for the Longhorns with a handoff to Jayden Blue for a touchdown in the first quarter. Mississippi answered back and even took a one-point lead, but it was short-lived.

Manning found DeAndre Moore Jr. for a picturesque 49-yard touchdown right before the stroke of halftime. Then he increased the lead further by walking in from one yard, not before a 26-yard scramble.

The game finished with three quickfire touchdowns. Manning found Moore early in the fourth quarter for a 27-yard run and then Isaiah Bond for a 26-yard homer with just 3 minutes left on either side of a Mississippi score.

Arch Manning finished the game with 26-of-31 passing for 324 yards with a 140.26 quarterback rating. In four games this season, he completed 900 passing yards for 9 touchdowns and two interceptions.

After the win, Sarkisian spoke on Manning’s performance on the night. In his view, it’s a luxury to have a player like the nephew of Hall of Famer Peyton Manning.

What a luxury to have a player of his caliber as our backup quarterback. We have two great players. We were able to get through this without having to put Quinn (Ewers) out there, and now he’s got two more weeks to get himself healthy for the second half of the season.

It remains to be seen whether Sarkisian will keep playing Manning when Ewers comes back from rehab. Before the injury, Ewers threw 691 yards, 8 touchdowns, and 2 interceptions in the three games he played.

Regardless, until Ewers returns, Manning will continue as the starter. Up next, the Longhorns will travel to the Cotton Bowl and face #21 Oklahoma Sooners on October 13.
