Is there bad blood between Travis Hunter and Cam Newton? The former NFL quarterback showed up before Saturday night’s Colorado Buffaloes game against the UCF Knights, greeting players with cameras following him at every turn.
It was fine until Newton sought out Travis Hunter, who arrived at the stadium wearing a t-shirt with the word ‘bland’ inscribed at the front. The Buffs wide receiver/cornerback switched to his Buffs gear, and while he waited for the game to start on the sidelines, Cam Newton tippy-toed to get closer.
Nobody expected what happened next. Although Newton, on his own accord, came to wish good luck, Hunter brushed off the former NFL MVP. A confused Newton stood there with a smile on his face, dumbfounded by the rejection.

Newton did not learn from his lesson because before Hunter he found Buffs quarterback Shedeur Sanders going through his warmup routine. Sanders did not reciprocate. Videos showed the young Colorado quarterback walking away without saying a word to the former Super Bowl MVP.

Does Travis Hunter hate Cam Newton?
Hunter turning Newton away was shocking because he was part of the former Panthers quarterback’s 7-on-7 team back in high school. The 21-year-old first caught the eye of college football scouts while playing for Newton’s team.
247 Sports ranked Hunter as one of the few five-star recruits with a rare athletic ability to play both offense and defense. He kept up with routine even while playing Division One football.
Newton admired the Texas native’s unique skills but also highlighted that at some point Hunter must choose between being a receiver or corner.

Did this make Hunter angry? His recent exchange of words with Richard Sherman might suggest that it could be the reason. Sherman who played cornerback at an all-pro level for a long period of time argued that the Buffs player doesn’t have the build to constantly stay on the field for 2-3 hours every game. After hearing Sherman’s assessment, Hunter told the Super Bowl winner to just let him do his thing.
If he is upset with Newton over something or was it just harmless banter, only Hunter can tell. Hunter’s first year in Colorado ended with 57 catches for 721 yards and 5 touchdowns. He already matched the TD count in just 4 games in 2024 along with 30 receptions for 472 yards before the UCF game.
