After suffering consecutive losses, the Phoenix Suns led by Dillon Brooks are back to winning ways. The Suns took out the Brooklyn Nets 106-102 at the Mortgage Matchup Center on Tuesday night. It was an important win for the Suns in a heavily contested Western Conference.
It was their 15th win in 21 games on home court, highlighting their impressive form at home. The win improved their record to 28-19 and and lifted them over the Minnesota Timberwolves to sixth place in the Western Conference standings as they look for a direct playoff qualification. Meanwhile, the loss extended the Nets’ losing streak to six games as they sit at 13th place in the Eastern Conference standings with a 12-33 record.
With primary scorer Devin Booker ruled out, it was Dillon Brooks who led the team with 26 points alongside Mark Williams who scored a team-high 27 points. Since joining the Suns, Brooks has shown considerable growth in his offensive game and is currently averaging a career-high 20.5 points. His performances this season may earn him his maiden All-Star appearance as he continues to elevate his game into one of the best two-way players in the league.
Following the departure of Kevin Durant, many expected the Suns to be a lottery team this season, but Brooks had other ideas. He has continued with his feud with LeBron James and has had a few heated exchanges with the four-time champion during their matchups this season.
The 30-year-old was caught up in another controversial moment on Tuesday. Brooks received his 15th technical foul of the season and even received a flagrant one foul for striking Nets big man Nic Claxton in the midsection area. Brooks, however, was not pleased with the officials and their calls.
Maybe they might need to go to communication class or something like that to help them out with being able to talk with the players and know them as much as we get to know them.

The Suns forward is no stranger to Flagrant fouls and is currently tied with Rudy Gobert for the most Flagrant 1 fouls in the league this season, with four. Another Flagrant foul and he will be suspended for a game. Similarly, a 16th technical foul will lead to a suspension for a game as well. Brooks must be extra careful from here on out if he wants to avoid that suspension.
Phoenix Suns struggle with injuries
Before heading into Tuesday’s clash with the Nets, the Suns were not only avoiding their first three-game losing streak since October, but they were also dealing with a number of injuries to their key players. They took to court without the services of Jalen Green (right hamstring), Booker (right ankle), Collin Gillespie (right hand sprain), and Isaiah Livers (illness).
With three starters ruled out, the Suns struggled from the three-point range as they made just 5 threes in 20 attempts in the entire game. But they focused on their strengths by scoring in the paint and playing elite defense. The bench played a vital role as well by scoring 24 points.
Both Booker and Green are expected to return soon for the Suns and provide some much-needed firepower in their backcourt. Till then, it will be up to Brooks to lead the team and the rest of the roster to step up.
Jordan Ott deserves to be a Coach of the Year candidate
While the majority of the pundits and fans expected the Suns to be a lottery team this year, they have made the critics eat their words. After a slow start to the campaign where they went 1-4 in their first five games, the Suns have gone 27-15 since and have a good chance of finishing in the top six. They have shown that they can take on the best teams in the West this season.
They are one of the eight teams this season to take out the defending champions, the Oklahoma City Thunder. The players deserve their praises, but head coach Jordan Ott deserves his flowers as well.

On The Hoop’s Collective’s latest podcast, Brian Windhorst, Tim MacMahon, and Tim Bontemps all praise Ott for the work he has done. Bontemps said:
It’s not an insult to say the Suns are overachieving. The Suns are overachieving. That’s fine. They’re having an awesome season. Jordan Ott’s had a fabulous season. He should be right near the top of Coach of the Year voting at this point of the year.
They may not be championship contenders this season, but Ott has shown everyone that the Suns are heading in the right direction at the moment.
