Miami Dolphins seems to have a difficult start to the 2024 season. In the opening game, though they won, their star wide receiver Tyreek Hill became a victim to racism in America and in the second week, their star quarterback Tua Tagovailoa sustained the third confirmed concussion of his NFL career– which further compelled everyone to start suggesting his retirement.

While retirement is a whole other subject, the Dolphins have replaced Tagovailoa with backup Skylar Thompson to give him time to recover properly. Although it’s a big opportunity for Thompson to display his prowess and build a name for himself by leading Miami’s offense, he couldn’t celebrate it as he should have.

While addressing the media at the post-game press conference, the backup quarterback was asked about his teammate’s injury and his response well reflected his frustration over the whole thing.

It makes me sick. In my position [as the backup], you never want the opportunity to come with something like that. Have a lot of love for Tua. Built a great relationship with him. And you care about the person more than the player.

Thompson shared that everyone in the team is more concerned about Tagovailoa than they are for this season. They all are praying for his full and speedy recovery, not only to have him back on the football field but to make sure his alarming concussion count doesn’t lead to CTE in the future.

Dolphins HC Mike McDaniel confident in backup QB Skylar Thompson

While the starting quarterback is in recovery, head coach Mike McDaniel expressed his confidence in backup quarterback Thompson, who covered for the former in week 2 against the Buffalo Bills and will continue until Tagovailoa recovers properly. He also said that the priority for the team is Pro Bowler’s full recovery from his concussion.

I don’t know what our timeline is. I’m not concerned with that. We played with Skylar as a rookie with the season on the line and found a way to win an elimination game.

The last time when Thompson covered for Tagovailoa was in 2022 when the latter sustained a concussion in week 16 in the defeat against the Green Bay Packers. He clinched a spot in the playoffs after a victory in one of the two games he started. Later in the playoffs, he faced a close defeat of 34-31 in the wild-card round.
