Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz’s dominance in the ATP has left Alexander Zverev without a Grand Slam title. Despite the German reaching two major finals in less than eight months, his chances were cut out by them. But his friend and former tennis star Dominic Thiem hopes he will claim one Slam.

Sinner and Alcaraz have taken charge of the Big titles on Tour since Novak Djokovic dropped his level of competitiveness. The duo have made it a point to get their hands on the title in most of the tournaments they have competed in. The same cannot be said for Zverev, who has struggled to rise up to the occasion when it has mattered the most.

The World No.2 reached the French Open final last year after being handed a better draw than his rivals. Despite his form, he failed to beat Alcaraz in the final. He had the same opportunity in January at the Australian Open. In fact, his semi-final opponent Djokovic was forced to retire after just one set, leaving him with enough time to practice for the final.

Yet again, he failed to win, succumbing to a defeat against Sinner in the final. He had been often criticized for his lack of determination in Slam finals. However, Dominic Thiem hopes that his childhood friend Zverev will win a major title in the future.

I hope Zverev manages to win a Slam. He has had too important a career to never have succeeded. The truth is that without the Big Three, everyone said it would be easier to win, but to do so today, you have to beat at least one of Sinner and Alcaraz, if not both. Today, however, those two are as difficult to beat as Djokovic and Federer were in their time.

Zverev has failed to win any title this season. At the Argentina Open and Rio Open, he was heavily favored to win both titles but failed to claim either of them. He will hope to recover his form at the European clay swing.

Dominic Thiem retired from professional tennis last year but before that he had significantly dropped in form. The Austrian made history by becoming the first player from his country to win the US Open singles title. But in 2021, he suffered a wrist injury that he never recovered from. He recounted his poor form after the wrist injury.

There were periods in which it was better, then moments in which everything seemed to be going terribly, and then phases in which I played well and managed to beat really strong opponents. It was a bit of a common thread in the final phase of my career: I lacked the right sensitivity to hit the ball in the right place. I don’t know if it was mechanical, mental or linked to a nerve in the wrist.. I could have had surgery, but it would have been quite invasive, so I’m convinced I made the right choice.
