The Dominican Republic have had an indifferent run thus far in the Tokyo Olympics. However, a bronze medal finish would end their campaign on a positive note. They could have won against Japan in a Group A match, but ending up losing, tantalisingly, 3-4.

Thereafter, they brushed aside Mexico by a margin of 1-0. In the Round 1 match, it was South Korea, who beat them 4-3. Israel gave them a run for their money as well. Then they lost to the United States 3-1 in the Repechage 2 match on Wednesday, August 7.

South Korea, also, have had a similar campaign to that of their upcoming opponent. They began their Olympics sojourn with a 6-5 victory over debutants Israel where the game went right down to the wire. But they lost 4-2 at the hands of the United States.

In their Round 1 match, they beat the Dominicans 4-3 after which they decimated Israel 11-1. The win against Israel was expected to have kept them in good stead. However, Japan defeated them 5-2 in the semi-final. Going in the last match, they seem to have the upper hand.
