Dominik Mysterio had been part of WWE storylines long before he officially debuted in the ring, with fans still remembering his role in the unforgettable rivalry between Rey Mysterio and Eddie Guerrero. That feud culminated at SummerSlam 2005 in a dramatic Ladder Match for the custody of Dominik, one of the company’s most iconic storylines.

Though Rey and Eddie were once tag team champions and had delivered a classic match at WrestleMania 21 as respectful rivals, their relationship took a sharp turn when Guerrero turned heel. The feud became deeply personal, with Eddie claiming that Dominik was actually his biological son. Nearly 20 years later, the angle remains one of the most memorable in history.

In a recent interview with the Towers of Power Pro Wrestling Podcast, the reigning AAA Mega Champion reflected on an incident from that storyline that perfectly illustrated his father’s old-school approach to protecting the business.

During the custody angle, WWE portrayed Dominik as being taken away by a social worker. Dom revealed how Rey made sure the illusion carried over even after the cameras stopped rolling.

During the custody battle, when I was supposedly getting taken by the social worker and I’d go back home with my parents, they’d put me in the back seat in crevices and cover me with clothes and bags so people couldn’t see me because there’s fans outside the arena. So that’s how I grew up, like old school. They wanted people to believe that I was being taken by a social worker.

Rey Mysterio ultimately won full custody of his son by defeating Eddie Guerrero in their emotional Ladder Match at SummerSlam 2005. This past Thursday, November 13, marked the 20th anniversary of Eddie Guerrero’s passing. In remembrance, the former World Champion honored his late friend with a heartfelt letter published through The Players’ Tribune.

Dominik Mysterio stays true to his heel roots and reveals the reason for interrupting John Cena in Boston

On the November 10th segment of Monday Night Raw, John Cena defeated Dominik Mysterio to capture the Intercontinental Championship, completing his long-awaited Grand Slam and adding yet another milestone to his legendary resume.

According to Dave Meltzer on Wrestling Observer Radio, the match was originally slated for this month’s WWE Survivor Series premium live event. However, WWE shifted the bout to the red brand so Cena could enjoy a major moment in his final hometown appearance in Boston.

While losing his status as a double champ definitely hurt Mysterio, ‘Dirty Dom’ is staying true to his elite heel persona. In the same podcast appearance, the 28-year-old claimed he intentionally stole Cena’s spotlight, revealing that he purposely interrupted him to make the night about himself instead.

Moreover, he explained how he mentally prepared to walk into an arena packed with fans ready to celebrate Cena and Triple H. When asked about his mindset entering the segment, he didn’t hesitate.

It was, it wasn’t even more of like preparing. It was just making that moment about me, you know? I knew I was going to be in there with, obviously, John Cena and Triple H in Boston, TD Garden—everything was perfectly in place for John Cena, and it was his night. So when I went out there, I made sure that it was about me.

Mysterio carried that same attitude into the opening bout, where he defended the Intercontinental Championship against Cena after provoking him. Despite ambushing the 17-time World Champion before the opening bell and surviving a chaotic referee bump, Dom couldn’t hold onto the gold.

Cena ultimately scored the victory, claiming the only title that had previously eluded him and completing his Grand Slam ahead of his upcoming retirement. Now with just three appearances left in his year-long retirement tour, it will be interesting to see how the company plans out his remaining dates, including his last ever Raw on November 17th at Madison Square Garden
