The prestigious Intercontinental Championship has been historically acclaimed as the workingman’s title. Its current holder, Dominik Mysterio, is still getting used to it. Coming out of this week’s Raw, it was confirmed that the 28-year-old will put that lustrous belt on the line against Penta at Backlash this Saturday. It’ll be Mysterio’s second title defense since WrestleMania 41.

WWE Chief Content Officer Triple H posted on X that two legacies of lucha libre will lock horns at this weekend’s PLE in St. Louis. Rey Mysterio‘s son denied the former AEW star the title glory in their previous encounter. They went to war on Raw after WrestleMania.

However, JD McDonagh, who had been absent for weeks owing to punctured lungs and broken ribs, cost the luchador the title match. “Dirty” Dom was elated to see his stablemate back and already contributing to the betterment of The Judgment Day.

On the subsequent Monday Night Raw taping, Finn Balor and McDonagh lost to The War Raiders in a non-title tag team match. The closing moments saw Penta making McDonagh pay for doing him dirty against Mysterio. That’s how a singles match between the two came about this week. Not only Carlito and Balor, but also Chad Gable interfered in Penta’s business against The Irish Ace.

However, the former Lucha Bros member overcame everything to register a pinfall victory over McDonagh. Speaking of Penta’s Backlash opponent, Mysterio, he’s on cloud nine since WrestleMania. After he won the gold, the San Diego native surprisingly got cheered by the Las Vegas crowd. Rhea Ripley‘s on-screen ex also disclosed the dastardly deed he pulled off on his mother after scripting history.

AJ Styles issued a warning to Dominik Mysterio on Raw

In one of the backstage segments of Raw this week, AJ Styles confronted the Judgment Day in their clubhouse. He gave a little heads-up to Finn Balor to begin with, calling him “Prince.” The 47-year-old said he didn’t come to start any fight. However, Styles did give Dominik Mysterio a friendly reminder that he’ll be going after the Intercontinental Championship, whose possession will be decided between Mysterio and Penta at Backlash.

The Rhea Ripley-accused Chicken Tender Slut soon realized that he does have a lot on his plate at the moment. Mysterio looked over at Balor and asked him to take care of The Phenomenal One since they have a history with each other. The inaugural Universal Champion, at once, snapped and yelled at his teammate, asking if he was only there to clean up his mess.

Just when it seemed like something was about to go down, the Irish wrestler gleefully pulled back from the vitriol he had just spewed. Balor said he’ll indeed handle Styles. They’re now set for a singles match on next week’s Raw.

The cracks between Mysterio and Balor have been evident for months now. It’d be interesting to see when WWE eventually pulls the trigger on breaking the veteran away from the Judgment Day.

Dominik Mysterio admitted missing Liv Morgan amid her ongoing sabbatical

In the same segment as above, Dominik Mysterio, after assuring his stablemates that he’ll keep Penta in check at Backlash, said he was already missing his Güerita. And it’s obvious that the former NXT North American Champion was talking about his on-screen girlfriend, Liv Morgan.

For the unversed, she’ll be off WWE for a number of weeks to film her role in Bad Lieutenant: Tokyo. It’s a US-Japan co-production with Takashi Mike directing the project. Reports claim that Morgan’s hiatus isn’t expected to strip her of the women’s tag team titles she’s currently holding alongside Raquel Rodriguez.

They regained those belts from Becky Lynch and Lyra Valkyria on Raw after WrestleMania 41. It was after only this loss that ticked Lynch off and she turned on her Irish compatriot. They’ll settle the score at Backlash when Valkyria defends her women’s IC title against The Man.
