If the fans thought a simple exhibition match between two tennis stars could happen without turning into a massive culture war battleground, they clearly haven’t been on the internet lately. The much-hyped “Battle of the Sexes” between WTA World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka and Nick Kyrgios went down recently, and the results were pretty much what biology textbooks would suggest.

Kyrgios swept Sabalenka off the court in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3. But while the tennis world was analyzing serve speeds and unforced errors, conservative political commentator Dinesh D’Souza was busy taking a victory lap on social media, claiming the match was actually a 4D chess move designed to destroy the arguments of transgender activists. D’Souza said on X:

You seem upset that that fantasy of gender equality has been decisively toppled. Also the trans nonsense: does anyone seriously think Aryna Sabalenka could “identify” as a man and beat the top male players.

Despite the gap in current professional standing, Kyrgios dominated the physical aspect of the game. It didn’t take long for D’Souza to jump onto X to point out exactly why this happened. According to the “2000 Mules” creator, Sabalenka didn’t just lose a tennis match; she dismantled an entire ideology.

D’Souza framed the loss as a deliberate exposure of the “trans lunatics,” suggesting that Sabalenka’s participation was a “genius move” to highlight the biological disparities between sexes. In his view, watching a male player dismantle the absolute peak of women’s tennis proves that the push for gender neutrality in sports is a farce.

Aryna Sabalenka agrees that biological advantages are real

The fans might think Dinesh D’Souza is just projecting his politics onto Aryna Sabalenka, but the tennis star herself seems to be on the same page. This wasn’t a case of a commentator putting words in an athlete’s mouth.

In an interview with Piers Morgan leading up to the clash, Sabalenka was point-blank asked about the transgender debate. She admitted that while she has nothing against trans people personally, the biology creates an unlevel playing field.

I feel like they still got a huge advantage over the women. It’s not fair on women to face basically biological men.

She went on to describe the frustration of working a lifetime to reach the physical limit of female performance, only to face someone biologically stronger. So, while D’Souza might be delivering the message with a sledgehammer, the athlete at the center of the storm actually agrees with the premise. Even Nick Kyrgios chimed in, saying Sabalenka “hit the nail on the head.”

Dinesh D’Souza’s comments might have added fuel to fire

Dinesh D’Souza isn’t alone on this island. Tennis legend Martina Navratilova has been fighting this battle for years, consistently arguing against the inclusion of trans women in female categories.

The match was billed as a modern spiritual successor to the legendary 1973 clash, where Billie Jean King defeated Bobby Riggs. But the vibes here were completely different. Sabalenka is currently the world’s best female player. Kyrgios has been battling injuries, is currently unranked (sitting outside the top 600), and basically treats tennis like a side hustle these days.

With the governing bodies of tennis constantly tweaking rules and looking at testosterone levels, this exhibition match, and the subsequent commentary from figures like D’Souza, have thrown gasoline on an already raging fire.
