The participation of transgender athletes in sports has been a contentious issue, drawing significant attention and debate over fairness, inclusion, and competitive integrity. The controversy intensified during the Paris Olympics when Italian boxer Angela Carini lost to Algerian Imane Khelif, an alleged biological male. The issue has garnered responses from many influential figures, including US presidential candidate Donald Trump.
Shortly after the story went viral, Donald Trump made a post on Truth Social. The post featured a clip from the boxing match where Carini decided to forfeit the match against her opponent. The former President of the United States captioned the video saying that if elected, he would keep men out of women’s sports.
It is unclear what amount of power Trump will hold over the matter even if he is elected president. He may be able to achieve his objective in the United States. Doing so at a grander scale will require persuading international sporting boards, such as the International Olympic Committee.

Carini forfeited the fight against Khelif in 46 seconds, claiming that she felt intense pain in her nose. Her coach also commented that she may have broken her nose during the match.
Later, in an interview, the Italian claimed that she had never taken a punch like that before. Furthermore, she refused to comment about her opponent’s inclusion in the women’s category, saying that it was not for her to decide.
Donald Trump’s running mate comments on Angela Carini forfeiting against Imane Khelif
Donald Trump’s running mate in the 2024 US Presidential Elections, JD Vance, also weighed in on the debate. He re-posted on X a video of the highlights from the match between Khelif and Carini. Vance captioned the post claiming that Kamala Harris‘ ideas about gender would lead to such situations as a grown man pummeling a woman in a boxing match.
JD Vance expressed disgust over this situation at the Paris Olympics. He believed that all leaders should condemn such behavior and keep biological men out of women’s sports, as promised by his Republican running mate.
The incident also received political attention from the Prime Minister of Carini’s home country, Italy. After the 25-year-old’s round-of-16 bout, Georgia Meloni said that the competition did not seem fair owing to the amount of testosterone in Khelif’s body. She was saddened when the Italian boxer had to walk away because of such reasons.
