US President Donald Trump was present at Arthur Ashe Stadium when Carlos Alcaraz was locking horns with Jannik Sinner in the men’s US Open final held on Sunday (September 7). Alcaraz took his Wimbledon defeat revenge with a 6-2, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 scoreline in just two hours and 42 minutes.

The match was way different than their previous two Grand Slam finals at the French Open and Wimbledon. Sinner, this time, simply was outclassed by the Spaniard. He failed to defend his title, with Alcaraz increasing his Big Title tally to 14. It was also his seventh title of the season, as well as his second Major of the season after the French Open win.

As is often the case, the US Open final drew a lot of celebrities from different fields. Among these, Trump was also present, and he watched the match from Rolex’s suite.

Trump’s grave expression while the crowd gave a standing ovation to the now six-time Grand Slam champion has gone viral. As overjoyed Alcaraz soaked in all the applause, Trump looked ‘unimpressed’.

Fans mock Donald Trump after reaction to Carlos Alcaraz’s US Open win goes viral

Some fans joked that Donald Trump, perhaps, was rooting for Jannik Sinner and lost a bet after Carlos Alcaraz won it. Some linked his reactions to his political views, joking that because Alcaraz won, he would impose additional tariffs on Spain.

As Sinner failed to defend his US Open title, he was also dethroned from the top of the rankings by Alcaraz. The 22-year-old, who reached the top after his career’s first Grand Slam win at the 2022 US Open and was removed by Novak Djokovic in September 2023, ended Sinner’s 65-week reign.

Sinner so far has played six finals this season, but his title tally is only two: beat Alexander Zverev in the Australian Open and Alcaraz in the Wimbledon final. Alcaraz, also the most consistent player on the men’s tour this season, has played consecutive finals from the Monte Carlo Masters, losing only the Barcelona Open and Wimbledon.

Marion Bartoli thinks Carlos Alcaraz will become almost unbeatable because of his serves

Sinner broke Alcaraz just once in as many chances he got during the final, with the latter converting five of the 11 break points. Alcaraz, in fact, won 98 of his 101 service games in the tournament and also dropped a set only against Sinner. Former player Marion Bartoli thinks that if Alcaraz continues to serve this well, it will be nearly impossible for other opponents to beat him.

For him, normally the serve we know is a shot that sometimes can go away, that’s why it has been ongoing work done by Juan Carlos Ferrero to sort of tweak the technique and make it reliable. It was not reliable at times before, today he won the US Open by being broken only three times throughout the tournament, that is [Roger] Federer-esque or [Pete] Sampras-like.

Marion Bartoli said on the BBC

Alcaraz hit 10 aces to Sinner’s just two and hit 42 winners. Sinner’s winners tally was 21. The Murcia native has become the second Grand Slam singles champion since 1991, after Sampras, to drop three or fewer games before lifting a Major title.

That is just a number that you won’t expect from Carlos Alcaraz. Mark my words, I’m saying it again, if Alcaraz starts to become that server that we’ve seen throughout this US Open, he’s going to become almost unbeatable.

Marion Bartoli added

Alcaraz has become the second youngest man to take home six Major singles titles in the Open Era after Bjorn Borg. He also ended Sinner’s 27-match winning streak on hard court Majors.
