- Donovan Mitchell's comments about winning in life after a playoff sweep sparked backlash from fans.
- The Cleveland Cavaliers were eliminated in the Eastern Conference Finals after a 0-4 sweep by the New York Knicks.
- Mitchell declined to comment on LeBron James' potential return to the Cavaliers, stating it was not his place to address.
Donovan Mitchell and the Cleveland Cavaliers saw their 2025-26 campaign come to a disappointing end. While Mitchell did play in his first-ever Conference Finals this year, he struggled to have an impact when it mattered the most.
After consecutive Game 7 wins over the Toronto Raptors and the Detroit Pistons in the first two rounds, the Cavs were a disaster against the New York Knicks in the Eastern Conference Finals. Their season came to an end after getting clean-swept by the Knicks.
When speaking about his future with the Cavs, Mitchell expressed that whether he wins a ring or not, he has won in life.
We may win a ring here. We may never win a ring here. But I’ve won in life.

There were a lot of hopes surrounding the Cavs this year. After some impressive regular seasons over the last few years, they have struggled to make any deep postseason run.
The Cavs traded for Donovan Mitchell in the 2022 offseason. He was the first big superstar to play for them since LeBron James left the club. However, after losing in the Eastern Conference Semifinals for three consecutive years, the Cavs decided to make some big changes.
They traded for James Harden at the trade deadline this year. After the move, Mitchell claimed that the team is going all in to win a championship this year.
While the Cavs had their best postseason run since 2018, Mitchell had some ups and downs during these playoffs. But a clean sweep in the Eastern Conference Finals was not an ending they would have not hoped for.

Fans were not happy with Mitchell’s statements. They believe a franchise player shouldn’t make such comments about winning championships.
Donovan Mitchell declines to comment on potential LeBron James return to Cavs
With LeBron James‘ contract with the Los Angeles Lakers coming to an end in this offseason, there have been several reports linking him back to the Cavs. A return to the Cavs may prove to be beneficial for both the player and the franchise.

When asked about a potential James return to the Cavs, Donovan Mitchell addressed the possibility of James returning to the Cavs.
That is not for me. I’m not trying to get a headline, that’s not for me. I’m not going to answer that. That’s not for me, that’s a Koby Altman question, it’s a Mike Gansey question because I know no matter what I say, no matter how I say it and how I try to navigate it, it’s going to be a thing. So, I’m sorry, I’m not going to give you anything.

There are many suitors for James, who is coming off a Western Conference Semifinals appearance. But a return to the Cavs would be the perfect ending for arguably the greatest career in league history.
