In Short
  • Donovan Mitchell led the Cleveland Cavaliers to a decisive 31-point victory in Game 7 against the Detroit Pistons, scoring 26 points with six rebounds and eight assists.
  • Mitchell celebrated the win with his fiancée, Coco Jones, after overcoming criticism for his previous performance in Game 6.
  • The Cavaliers are expected to offer Mitchell a lucrative contract extension this July, potentially worth $272 million over four years.

In Game 6, Donovan Mitchell faced some deserved heat, both from fans and analysts, after his disastrous performance helped the Detroit Pistons to square the series.

He had been playing at his best up until that game, which was one of the major reasons the Cleveland Cavaliers managed to get the upper hand after five games.

In that game, his efficiency was so poor that James Harden managed to escape trolls, despite not performing to his regular-season standards.

The veteran cleaned up his turnovers after receiving a lot of flak. But Mitchell’s performance stopped the Cavaliers from finishing the job in front of their home fans.

Returning to Detroit for Game 7, Pistons fans felt it was going to be their time. Instead, the 29-year-old dominated from the beginning. He led by example and even let the home team know he was not taking this task of sending the Cavaliers to the Eastern Conference Finals casually.

His buzzer-beater, his smooth and sometimes powerful show, was a leader stating an intent. Once his teammates followed, the game became a one-sided affair.

The Cavaliers won by 31 points, with Donovan Mitchell recording 26 points, six rebounds, and eight assists in a shade over 30 minutes. Once the final buzzer sounded, the first thing he did was run straight to his fiancée, Coco Jones.

They shared a kiss, and the actor-singer was seen mouthing something akin to ‘you did it.’ It seemed as if it was relief for the couple after the superstar guard faced a lot of flak for not stepping up earlier in his career.

Donovan Mitchell could earn major payday this offseason

After stepping up and leading the Cleveland Cavaliers back from a 0-2 deficit to win the series, it is natural that the franchise will have to think of rewarding Donovan Mitchell down the line.

The New York native has made himself at home in Cleveland, Ohio, and does not mind bringing in his fiancée from the Big Apple from time to time.

The Cavaliers are expected to offer Donovan Mitchell a 4-year, $272M extension this July. However, waiting until 2027 could allow Mitchell to sign a 5-year, $350M deal that includes a no-trade clause.

Polymarket Hoops quoted Brian Windhorst

If Brian Windhorst’s prediction becomes true, Mitchell would end up earning at least half a billion by the end of this new contract. If he waits until the 2027 offseason, he can earn an additional $80 million.

A few players, such as Austin Reaves and Nikola Jokic, have deferred signing their extensions to land monster extensions in the future. The seven-time All-Star can do the same if he wants.

But he might want to wait and see what LeBron James decides before putting pen to paper. If the King were to join Donovan Mitchell and James Harden in Cleveland, the former might as well wait to sign the $350 million deal next year.

Donovan Mitchell and Cavs will have one day to recover before playing the well-rested Knicks

Now that Donovan Mitchell and his Cleveland Cavaliers have booked their tickets to his hometown to face the New York Knicks, the most important goal for them would be rest.

Playing seven playoff games is not easy, and the last thing the team would want is for their season to end due to fatigue. On top of that, the New York Knicks are well-rested.

After sweeping the Philadelphia 76ers in four games, the high-scoring Knicks will have nearly nine days before they next play a game of basketball.

Sometimes, that amount of rest can lead to rust. Mitchell and his teammates should take advantage of that in the first two games at Madison Square Garden. However, it will not be easy on tired legs.
